Organize a Kids' Closet Lickety-Split
Monsters have nowhere to hide and cleanup is a piece of cake when you organize the storage space in your child's closet with these tips
Organizing children's closets can be difficult, to say the least — getting the most out of the available space is crucial since their rooms are often smaller, but kids have a ton of stuff. Many families choose to store not only clothing but toys, sports equipment, memorabilia and even stand-alone dressers in their children's closets. Whether your closets are big or small, see how maximizing your space with these simple ideas will get your children's rooms and their closets more organized — and make your life a bit easier.
If your home is like mine and lacks a playroom, consider adding shelving to your children's closets to store toys. Large baskets can contain smaller items and are easily moved from room to room when playtime begins.
If you plan to add an organizing system to your children's closets, make sure to include adjustable clothing rods. Narrow space between rods makes sense for a baby's wardrobe but won't work for an older child's clothes.
The large metal baskets in the closet shown here are perfect for storing sports equipment. There's always the option to use them as a clothing hamper too — the perfect solution for smelly gym socks.
If your closets are deep, why not add clothing bars around the entire perimeter? It's an unusual arrangement but a great way to get the most out of the space.
Add a little fun to the closet by installing a whiteboard or chalkboard for creative expression. Write favorite quotes or let them create masterpieces for all to enjoy.
Installing a child-size Dutch door to the closet or toy room will encourage hours upon hours of pretend play.
If you want to keep certain keepsakes out of reach but still on display, consider removing the doors from the closet and placing the items up on shelves.
Try placing a chest of drawers inside the closet. This is a good storage solution if your child doesn't have much need for hanging storage and you don't have the budget for a custom closet system. You'll have the drawer storage you need and more space in your child's room to play.
