Using white for he back splash keeps it neutral and clean. The only other consideration for me would have been to add a decorative pattern - like doing a glossy white pencil to do a "picture frame" and changing the pattern of the tile to a hearing-bone or thatch pattern - this would have added to the appearance but not cost the owner much if at all.
