The Soothing Effect of Symmetry

A hallmark of traditional design, symmetry always does a great job of adding "visual calmness" and balance to a room.

There's just something about placing items in an almost mirror image that encourages a very soothing and harmonious look and feel.

Matching lamps on each side of the bed, identically built bookcases flanking a fireplace, or twin wing backs in front of a window, the look is always very structured and clean.

But just because symmetry is characterized by the pairing of items, doesn't mean they always have to be identical.

The bedside table on one side of a bed can look different from the bedside table on the other side of the bed. And the lamps on top of each table can be totally different too. Just stick with things that are close to the size size, or the same color and for an equally symmetrical look without looking like an exact match.
I love that even thought there is different furniture on each side of this photo, there's still a feeling of perfect symmetry. Together, the armchairs equal the size of the sofa, and since they're both white, everything is perfectly balanced.
This breakfast nook is so organized and inviting. I love the matching benches (and plates) on either side of the table.
Identical built-ins are in keeping with the traditional vibe throughout the rest of this room.
I love how this window is surrounded by perfect symmetry on all sides.
From the ottomans, to the armchairs, to the built-in unit, to the speakers- whoever designed this room was definitely thinking symmetrically!
Even a Laundry Room can be designed around the concept of symmetry!
What a beautifully symmetrical view. It would certainly encourage me to cook more!
If you look up the word "symmetry" in the dictionary, it is very possible you will see this photo next to it. :-)

mom2boys I like the concept of symmetry but it's important not to be fanatic ... The laundry room is amazing!

pwalter I totally agree with the calmness of symetry...so why do my friends always laugh at me when I say things should be balanced? www.satisfiedsole.com

Dawn symmetry = the same on both sides
asymmetry = balanced, but not the same.

All are forms of balance. Symmetry provides more relaxation, but sometimes can be monotonous if followed throughout an entire home. Bits of asymmetry add interest.

Great photos!
