Mustard Yellow Offers a Fresh Taste for Rooms
New shades and tones have sown the seeds of a mustard-yellow revival, and rooms everywhere are reaping the benefit
Houzz Contributor. Fresh out of journalism school, I fell into decorating media and immediately discovered a new passion. An Atlanta native, I spent several years as an editor for Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles magazine before making the leap to national publications and websites such as Houzz, Better Homes and Gardens and Southern Accents. I live in Birmingham, Alabama, with my husband and son, who’ve gotten used to coming home and finding the furniture rearranged. When I'm not dragging case goods across the floor, I enjoy good food and wine, college football, music of all kinds, and traveling.

There was a time when mustard yellow was one of those colors that conjured up Brady Bunch nightmares, similar to burnt orange and avocado green. Happily, we've come to our senses since then, and mustard has gone from dated to dashing. Yellow can be a difficult color to work with, but the browns in mustard make it a little easier to approach. Need proof? Just look at the varied personalities that mustard takes on below.
Muted. Deep gray keeps a mustard coverlet and pillows in check, preserving this bedroom's quiet air.
Glam. Mustard-yellow tile adds a swanky top note to a sophisticated bath. The effect has more mystique than plain white would offer.

| Strong. To pull off a yellow sofa, you need a room with enough moxie to stand up to the impact. This graphic scheme rises to the challenge admirably. |
Mod. Deep mustard yellow, a classic midcentury hue, perfectly complements the retro attitude of this living area and reflects the golden flooring color.
Elegant. Subtle mustard on the island lightens the banks of black cabinetry and elevates the feel of this kitchen.

Cheery. This yellow door simply beams, drawing visitors right in.

| Eclectic. It's hard to imagine another wall color that would look as fitting as mustard does in this casual, collected bedroom. It's just offbeat enough to support the whimsical gallery wall and panoply of patterns. |
Formal. Mustard shows its traditional side in this gracious dining room. Deep woods with reddish undertones look all the richer against it.

Use this French-inspired yellow in a room that gets afternoon sun. Illuminated, it radiates an irresistible glow.
This Dijon mustard hue borders on khaki. If you like the idea of yellow but aren't sure about venturing beyond neutral territory, make it your first step.

Madison Modern Home We love how mustard tones can range from French's to Grey Poupon to Guldens Spicy Brown -- and everything in between. Sometimes that bright pop of good ol' French's mustard color -- in this case, a vintage chair -- is just the thing.

K.O.H. Construction Corporation I'm glad to see this. We have a second home in the south that we're furnishing with some Mid Century Modern furniture. The living room is a light grey and the sofa is a medium grey. One of the accent chairs has a lot of mustard yellow and the other chair has a lighter grey fabric with squiglle circles. The plan is to add more tones of yellow in accent pillows, art and accessories.

Casart Coverings Agree with Lisa that yellow can be difficult to work with. Like any color, put up a generous wall sample and observe during various times of day. Yellow especially has the affinity to absorb the natural sunlight in the room and intensify in shade. Here are some examples of toning down the yellow by combining with an equally vibrant color such as magenta.

Sara Williams My husband and I just bought a house built in 1955 and the bathroom has mustard yellow tile with brown tile trim. Any ideas for a wall color? It currently has a hideous gold pattern wallpaper but I've got to do something to make it liveable before we can renovate. Thanks for any suggestions. :)

valerielynn I'm a lover of bold, saturated colors so when we moved into our 1959 ranch house I didn't mind the mustard yellow walls in the kitchen. The color was almost identical to the tile pictured in the article. However I felt frenzied everytime I walked in there. I didn't realize it was the color that was impacting me until I repainted with Benjamin Moore camouflage (it coordinated perfectly with my countertops and terrazzo floors). Now I love my kitchen and it feels much more serene. For this particular yellow, I would suggest small doses of it in your room instead of painting several walls with it.

Susie Q Design Studio Sarah, find a great modern wallpaper that combines the mustard yellow with another color you like with lots of white in the back ground. For instance, mustard and navy or mustard and eggplant or mustard and platinum gray. Then pant the brown trim tile with an epoxy paint in a glossy white. After you are done you may not want to remodel.

maggie23mad I have a large antique Oushak rug in my living room, placed over sisal carpeting. The walls are BM Gray Owl, and the 2 down sofas flanking the fireplace are in a mustard velvet....all trim, built-in bookcases, and plantation shutters, are white. Always get lots of compliments - and after 5 years, still loving it.

maggie23mad SARAH instead of paper, I'd paint the walls in a pearl gray (match a pale gray towel) in an eggshell (with some sheen) finish....then paint the sink cabinet in a deep gray (BM Fieldstone or Gray Horse?) and add BRASS hardware to it....yes, change the brown tile trim to glossy white - add white framed prints on the wall - white towels...maybe a touch of fuschia or hot turquoise somewhere... Could be gorgeous!
