Allow the backsplash to shine by hiding outlets.
This is fabric that has been protected from splatters. Inexpensive, beautiful, dramatic, and easy to change. What's not to love?
Chalkboard paint...yet somthing tells me this kid never moves from that spot. So you might want to put yours somewhere out of the way. :)
This is a drawer with built in outlets to keep clutter off the counter. Just make sure it's easy to access the outlets and that they are mounted well.
Tile doesn't have to be used just for backsplash, it also works well in the knee space of seating overhangs.
Everyone struggles with the area above the fridge...except NBA players...think about keeping it open. It could add visual interest by introducing a void above such a massive object.
Here's another example of open space above the fridge. Consider aligning the top (adjacent) shelf with the shelf above the fridge for greater order/flow.
This is a blind base cabinet with pull outs. It acts as an alternative to lazy susans. One of the downsides of lazy susans is the poor proportion of their doors. This type of base cabinet allows for more attractive lines...especially important in modern/contemporary design.
