Color Guide: How to Use Light Blue

olldbobbi I used light blue on the inside of my kitchen cabinets after I removed some of the doors. The outside and remaining doors are stark white to match the appliances. It's very charming, sort of a cottage feel. My favorite picture in this series is the sky, sand and spray. Beautiful!

the_misfit I used Behr's "fresh day" in my bathroom (it looks white on the swatch, on the can, in the can, on the brush - everywhere but on ALL FOUR walls); it's a ghostly-pale blue that looks just like sunlight to me. I was picturing something more like Behr's "arctic shadow" (which has a more periwinkle undertone) in my head, but once I saw it at work, I loved it, and I decided to use it on a dimly-lit stair hallway as well. It looks lovely there too. Highly recommended!

Kimberly Niesz I love light blue with crisp white! In my bedroom I used Blue Shamrock by Olympic Paints. Like a couple of your examples, I accented with pops of orange. In the small attached bath, I used the same color but mixed it half/half with white to produce a more subtle shade.

candymc73 Valspars "Angel Touch" on ceilings is almost white with the hint of blue. Very calming in any room.

kimber11 I love light blues, very classic and soothing. I have matched light blue and taupe for master bedroom with wood trim and furniture. Deep brown and light sky blue. Cool tone blue, grey and sand for the bathroom with white trim. It is the most versitile colour I find I use to add a little warmth and colour at the same time. Sea blue, almost turquiose and grey for a bedroom and yoga studio with orange has been my latest blue project. Love Love Love Blue.

ninabelle I like stafforrd blue #831 By Benjamin Moore. It's almost like a soft denim. Is is too dark to use in a loft with lots of windows?

crtown12 I am considering light blue for our living room, but having lived with a soft yellow to combat the snowy days in winter, I worry that I'm going to make my room look chilly. We have a new charcoal gray sectional (to replace the old beige one) and a charcoal and gray ottoman...did anyone have second thoughts when painting such a large expanse? Our trim is white.

mccutcheon1 As for light blue feeling chilly, some shades of blue wake me up, which isn't cold, for instance Benjamin Moore's White Satin. Also, obvious point, warm looking textures in any color can warm up a room of any color

Sorella Luna Blue was probably the last color I would have chosen for our bedroom. I told my husband to grab a few colors from the samples at Lowes and see if I could make up my mind. He showed me Mt. Airy blue and oddly enough I liked it. I did prefer a darker/grayer blue, so we compromised. The darker/grayer blue was painted above the fireplace which blended perfectly with the background color in the picture I found on sale at Kirklands. I told my son when he was hanging the picture to move it slightly to right. This way I could get all 3 candle holders bunched together without bumping against the frame.

florencejones I painted my master bathroom a gossamer blue. Love it and also It looks good with the dark vanity and ,white baseboards.

pastorjeanie I have used Laura Ashley's Navy 4 in several houses and still love it. Now use it in some of our apartments!

jjonesreynolds Can you suggest a blue paint color that would go well with dark wood stained moldings and wood floors in our Ky home. There is a lot of natural light and cathedral ceiling height. We love the masculine molding but want to soften it with a soft blue.

crtown12 I took the plunge and painted my open concept living room/kitchen a light blue...Valspar's Carolina Sky. I LOVE IT. I painted our red brick fireplace surround white, and added charcoal to the molding at the top to weigh it down a bit. Our furniture is gray and our entertainment center is dark brown (as are our kitchen cabinets). The darker woods help warm up what could be a very washed out, beachy look (which I wouldn't mind, except I live in the mountains and it wouldn't do to wish I was somewhere else all the time!). Our art is framed in thick black frames, and we changed out a white ceiling fan for a crystal chandelier surrounded by a rusty orb. My suggestion: if you love blue, just do it. I read somewhere that people with light colored eyes tend to enjoy blues better than people with dark eyes. My mom prefers the color of my berry dining room, but I'm happy with my sky blue living room!!

crtown12 Also, I watched the movie The Lucky One and the interior of the house had dark trim and blue walls....it was stunning!

marybraue I used the lightest shade of Sherwin Wiilliams blue in my kitchen with white crown molding and a Little bit of yellow. I love it:

jrun Very lovely bedroom but the closet doors caught my eye. Were the doors originally 3 sliding doors? If they were how did you renovate the closet. We have a 3 sliding door configuration for a master closet and when 2 people are trying to get ready, it's impossible! Any suggestions?

I don't think I was the one you were directing your question to, but we also had a sliding door closet that was a pain to use. Ours was a 2 door slider with about 2feet on either side extending behind the wall and was impossible to get to.
We completely removed the closet wall, repaired the drywall and installed 3 Ikea wardrobe units with sets of hinged doors. It was a great budget-friendly solution for us and as a bonus, it even freed up a few more inches of floor space. Before, during, and after pics below.

jrun Thank you, Kimberly! Yes, I was directing my question to you. I just happened to click on your name from the thread and your pics came up. I will definitely check out the Ikea website. Several years ago I re-organized the closet using The Container Store closet products. It's great except I want individual doors instead of sliding and having a carpenter come in and redo the closet would be out of the budget. Sooooo, the Ikea route might be the answer. Then it looks like I still could insert The Container Store organization system into the Ikea structure. Thank you sooooo much. Oh, and I also have a 1970's house!!

erasistible My husband refused to paint the natural wood trim in my living room. It had orange tones. I went with a caramel colored carpet and a bluish purple wall color with a mink brown sofa. It looks great! I get so many compliments on the color combo.
