The idea is fairly simple: Take a room, put a drain in the middle of it, and tile all four walls. You now have your very own wetroom. While this concept is popular in Europe, it has not gained the popularity or exposure here in the States. But as our nation continues to age, the idea of barrier-free interiors continues to be a focus in home remodeling, and wetrooms are the epitome of barrier-free spaces. Everything is raised up off the floor, and there are no internal walls, doors or shower curbs to get in the way.
Wetrooms present one particular design challenge: How do you make a room full of tile and cold surfaces inviting? Here are 8 tips on how to create a warm and inviting wetroom of your very own.

1. Add warmth in tile and wood selections. The most common perception of wetrooms is that they are cold because of all the tile. The use of cream and beige tiles in this wetroom variation give it a warm and luxurious feeling. High windows, a floating wood vanity brings in additional beauty and warmth. It's a beautiful bathroom that just happens to also be a wetroom.
2. Look for unused space. This room looks like it was previously a storage room in a warehouse turned residence. The black slate floors, dove grey walls, antiqued tub and large skylight transform this space into a beautiful and industrial wetroom.

3. Use texture and patterns to make the space feel larger. The careful selection of penny tiles in bold colors reminiscent of the ocean (think sky, water and sand) plays an important role in making this room feel expansive. The strong horizontal strips and cohesive patterns are all important to the aesthetic and playful nature of this room.

| 4. Feel free to use vintage styling. Most wetrooms trend towards the contemporary and modern aesthetic. This one goes the other direction. With stone-like tiles and a vintage looking pedestal sink, this wetroom feels like it belongs in an older home with lots of style. |

5. Look beyond traditional tile patterns. In today's design world, you can accomplish the warm look of wood without using the real thing. The use of tiles that look like wood open up the design possibilities. Contrasting areas of tile in this shower space add great dimension and interest.

| 6. Provide a place to sit. If the space is large enough, outdoor furniture (benches, stools, etc.) are a perfect way to replace the built-in bench found in a traditional shower. What to say about this wetroom? It's absolutely stunning! The pebble floor, stone mosaic walls in the wet zone and that fire-orange bench set it all off. |

7. Use glass to separate wet from dry zone. If you're concerned about getting water everywhere, a glass panel or shower curtain can be used to separate the wet zone from the dry zone. Just make sure it doesn't impede views through the space.

8. Add flexibility with fixtures both high and low. This shower has incredible flexibility with rain shower heads, body sprays and a handshower. The bench encourages seating for a more relaxing shower.

Karen Ho Fatt Love these wetroom designs. The last photo 8 is especially appealing to me: clean lines and the balance of the warmth of wood against the greyness of the tile and steel.

Commercial Interiors, D & D Inc. My dad made the wetroom suggestion for my 1960 house years ago and I am just now doing it. My cabana bath shower was more like a stand up coffin. Now it will encompass the "hallway" to the pool and be large enough for a comfortable shower. I used Houzz photos to show my contractor what I was going for. Thanks all for sharing.

Jason Ball Interiors, LLC @Loboryan - not that funny of a question. How about this for an answer? All wetrooms are bathrooms, but not all bathrooms are wetrooms. A wetroom is just a type of bathroom that been constructed to be a complete wet environment.

printer Our Jetted Tub was taken out as we were not using it. So glad my husband suggested the "Wet Room" - Ours is 7'x5' - easy!!!! to keep clean - just love it!

luckykats My only complaint is in the comfort level. I like to take long showers and without some way to contain the steam and warmth of the water, I could end up being covered in goose bumps by the time I'm done! Not my idea of relaxation.

kate skouros i have experience with wet rooms in europe. it' not very comfortable unless the shower has it's own, contained space. sticking a toilet in the same room to be used as a primary bath is not a great idea. for some reason, i don't find sitting on the toilet with my feet on a wet floor a particularly enjoyable experience. especially if i happen to be dry. but i'm funny that way. the DRY room is just another innovation that makes America great.
