White Done Right: Kitchens

I am an architectural design writer who often focuses on how environment can affect behavior. Before consulting privately, I received my MA in writing and ran a design boutique in Los Angeles.

White kitchens offer a clean sort of professionalized aesthetic. Being the heart of the house, as Julia Child once mentioned, the room can get busy with traffic and food preparation. White offers a calming uniformity and classic touch. But white (the color, after all, of a blank canvas) can mean so many different things. Especially in a room with such high functionality. These photos show an array of kitchens--and their adjacent spaces--that do white right.
The warm dark wood flooring grounds the cooler paint in the upper regions of the room. And the touches of green and carefully-selected utensils allowed out (like the knife board) give the kitchen a personal and used touch.
White cabinetry is the perfect remodeling choice for this cozy kitchen. It gives contrast to the dark floors and countertops, lightens up what another color choice might make too heavy, and gives a uniformity to the different shapes and pieces of cabinet and island surfaces.
Small and elegant. Details such as the lighting choice, the wall art, and the plants exhibit the meticulous thought put into this kitchen area without crowding out its functionality.
A lengthwise view of the same kitchen, showing how airy and open this narrow kitchen is. Uncomplicated and glowing and seemingly ready at a moment's notice to make excellent espresso or produce from the discreetly-placed fridge an array of French cheeses and crackers.
With white, texture matters. Here, visual interest is added to this kitchen with the tiling backsplash. Lighting in kitchens shouldn't be underrated. Look at what the lighting does here. Brilliant. Literally.
Another angle of this same petite and gorgeous kitchen space. The shape of the table and leather seating give a nice soft balance to the whole area.
White allows for other detailing without risking too much aesthetic noise. This eclectic choice of chairs around this table (plus the chandelier) makes this a stylish and very unique dining space.
Now this is immaculate taken most literally. With no visible handles, the white helps make this kitchen area into an almost blank canvas. This clean look would work so well in a multi-purpose area or a studio apartment. And ps the windows add discreet (and awesome) detailing.
A much different dwelling than a studio apartment, the white in this space also offers a continuity and free flow among the open rooms. And the creative details throughout make this space anything (anything!) but tedious.
Here is a direct view of the fabulous kitchen. LOVE the inlaid bookshelving to the right, and the discreet (and huge) fridge and cabinets to the left.
And voila: the opposing view. The color contrast of the light fixtures and the couch (complementing the flooring) is brilliant.

Adi Tatarko I love white kitchens: bright, clean, elegant, classic. I always look at other beautiful colored kitchens and end up saying that my next kitchen will be WHITE...

Margaret Everton Yes. Our last kitchen was burnt orange and, though I loved the color, I craved the classic clean of a white palate.
