Fence It In

Now that summer is here and I'm outside a lot, I've been thinking a lot about fences. They are, after all, the walls of our yards, but often they're an afterthought - at best, boring and forgetable, and at worst, just plain ugly. It's interesting to me that people who are so careful about the decor inside their houses often don't think twice about never replacing an unattractive fence - which everybody can see!

Admittedly, my own fence falls into the "boring" category, except where our front porch meets the side yard, where instead of a gate we hung a vintage glass-paneled door. Here are some great fences, though, that are anything but boring:
There's no reason why a fence has to be just one material. I love this combination of wood, concrete and plants. It reinvents the idea of "fence," thinking about it more as a 3-D barrier than a simple wooden wall.
This fence is so simple, but its uneven top makes it unusual and eye-catching. It's a great complement to a slightly modern or funky house.
Urban fences face challenges that suburban ones don't. They're all about privacy, but in an urban setting, that need is more immediate. I love the way these panes of frosted glass fill that need - so attractively, too.
Though I tend to prefer modern architecture, I am a sucker for a white picket fence. I love how it works, here, with this updated home.
I think this is a fantastic alternative to a traditional white picket fence. Its shape is modern, but the crisp white paint imbues it with a sense of old timey sweetness.
A stone wall is the natural choice for a rural home like this one, but it can be a gorgeous addition to a suburban or urban yard, too.
Extra detail bump this fence up from regular and boring to interesting and a cool aesthetic addition to this yard.
This combination of modern glass and rustic wood is a great match for a house that's mostly modern from the outside. The wood warms up the glass, but keeps a sleek profile.
Simple and traditional, in the right setting, looks just right. I love the simplicity of this wooden fence. It's clean and pretty and the dark wood is a lovely complement for the deep green yard and the home.
This cool combination of metal and wood is so different - it's a great modern alternative to plain wood or unattractive chain link. I like the addition of a pergola-like roof. The added dimension gives the whole structure more purpose.
