It seems to be a popular trend now to build a shelf above stoves which becomes part of the hood. I have a stove hood like this, and I really love the look. However, I have noticed that some people use this area for display purposes. Mine is not decorated, and I have often thought it looked plain. I have begun compiling some ideas that I could use to add something pretty up there!
This is my kitchen stove area. It looks a little warmer in person than the photo shows, but something on the shelving might warm it up even more. The center two cabinet doors are covering the ugly vent. The two end doors actually have space behind them, but we have not needed to use it.
