With summer in full swing, it's natural to want to spend more time outdoors. If you live on sprawling acreage without another person in sight, then worrying about maintaining your privacy probably isn't high on your priority list. For the rest of us, coming up with creative and aesthetically pleasing ways to keep our festivities out of the view of neighbors can be challenging. Fences and walls can create privacy, sure, but tend to block light and views, and can be prohibitively expensive. For a pretty way to keep your light, your privacy and your vacation fund, give lattice a try.

edgedale Lattice fences are not less expensive than other fences as the first paragraph implies. Also a solid fence will give more sound "protection", our nice neighbors are from a culture where, it appears, loud & emphatic talking/shouting is the norm. Agree that the last one is very nicely done - going in my notebook.

gillianne I've seen handsome and functional combinations of solid wood fencing up to 4 or 5 feet and lattice above that to extend visual privacy without blocking light. That would be my preference for true privacy without an inside-of-a-shoebox feeling.

lovemcm If you do intend to train climbing plants, especially perennials like roses mentioned above, be mindful that if your lattice requires maintenance like staining, oiling or painting, clearly the parts of the plants that cover or are trained through the fence are going to present a problem.

vrnuta I live in a planned townhouse community where all permanent structures must be approved by an Architectural Control committee. When we were building a fence around our lot, I asked for but was denied permission to make the back fence a little higher than the standard 6 feet. So I bought 4 iron hooks, the kind that you use for hanging plant baskets, and screwed them on the back fence. Then I hung lattice panels on them, horizontally. It looks fabulous, as though they are floating in air, vines grow on them, and because they are not permanent structures, Architectural Control can do nothing to us.

Leslie Russell What seldom gets considered when deciding on privacy fencing is that solid materials don't allow the air to circulate and makes a solid barrier to any breeze that might blow through. An enclosed space can turn into a hotbox in a hurry.

jobo33 Beautiful Ideas, I have wooden board fence around my back yard, as the other person commented, more quiet priivacy, but these ideas have given me a new outlook for my porch and carport area.. Nicey done !!!

Denise McNeil What a fabulous idea! I never considered lattice. This is exactly what I need for my backyard. I have a great view but also inconsiderate neighbors who like to congregate on my lawn.

gkbates I have loved this look for a long time, but the cost is almost twice the cost of a "normal" privacy fence. What we did is 2 sides are solid and the one at the back "will be" lattice. Cuts the cost quite a bit...
