Fresh, healthy herbs make wonderful companions to all your favorite meals, but running back and forth to the store to pick them up can be time consuming and pricey. It's simple to plant a few of your favorite picks either indoors or out without having to create a special, dedicated bed in your yard. An étagère — a light, staircase-like piece of shelving — makes an ideal spot for growing and keeping all your favorite herbs right at your finger (or scissor) tips all year round.

If you're short on space on your étagère shelves, planting multiple herbs in one pot is a great option. Basil and curly parsley both love water, so they make great companions. Rosemary, sage and oregano thrive in drier environments and do well together.

One of the most interesting things about herbs is that they can have a beneficial relationship to one another. Basil, chamomile and oregano, for example, are excellent herbs to plant together because basil's growth is helped by chamomile while oregano's growth is helped by basil.
If any of your herbs is ever looking wilted or weak, consider finding one of its companion herbs to plant nearby.

Using an étagère can also be an excellent way to plant an indoor herb garden. Make sure to place it in a sunny spot where the herbs will receive light at least eight hours a day.
Keep in mind that indoor herbs can be subject to pest problems because they aren't subjected to the winter frosts that kill pest eggs. To free your indoor garden from insects, simply take a bottle of soapy water and spray all sides of the leaves until the bugs are gone. Soap kills the eggs but doesn't harm the plants.
