'Weave' Stone Tile for an Elegant Bath

countbla Would you use it? Definitely, I'm actually looking for a good porcelain (preferably in a carrera-ish looking pattern) basketweave mosaic for a small bathroom, if anyone has any product suggestions. I'm concerned real marble wouldn't get the maintenance and upkeep it deserves in this particular installation.

Rebekah Zaveloff Love all of these Debbie, thanks for putting them all together! I've been using basketweave quite a bit lately in lieu of hex tile. If you search it can be found for $10 /sf! Just took pictures of a house with where we did 2 bathrooms this way. I'll post pics in a bit. @countbla - porcelain basketweave is actually more expensive from what I've found..might want to stick to a hexagon pattern. Try www.tileshop.com

diynewbie_sf Speaking of maintenance, what kind of regular maintenance would this kind of marble floor require? (inside and outside the shower) Is a semi-annual sealer enough?

countbla @kitchenlab - thanks for the suggestion, I'll check it out - fortunately the floor is about 20 sqft, but yes looks this won't be exactly cheap ;).

A good penetrating sealer only needs to be applied every few years. The key is to use a PH neutral stone cleaner that will not strip the sealer. Most cleaners available at the grocery store are too strong.

patscats2 Forgive me if my ignorance is showing, but in the second to last photo, what is that in the alcove? Is that a tub for a child? It doesn't look large enough for an adult.

woofwoof Interesting, the black basketweave in the contemporary bathroom is the only floor that doesn't look cold. Maybe it's the warm colors that surround the room.

@ patscats2, that is a standard size tub. It just looks small because of the camera perspective. Also the alcove hides part of it.

Pam Moore Yes, we would and did! When we did a remodel of our Master Bath a couple of years ago, we first considered it for the entire floor, then because of cost, we decided to use it only in the shower. Now I'm actually glad it worked out that way, because I am very happy with it in the shower, and like the way it feels on my feet, almost like I'm getting a little foot massage when I walk on it. An added benefit is that it is not slippery like some floor tiles.

chrisdomf need help. Pam, why are you happy you didn't do the entire bath floor in the mosaic? I'm doing 4 mastersinger and plan on doing 24x24 travertine angled on floor, onyx basket weave in shower and same travertine sizes on wall of showers. I'm in love with the mosaic though!
Second, what travertine size for the shower wall would be considered old world meditterean?

sf_treat Yes, we are doing a Carrara basketweave bathroom right now. Do you have a recommendation of grout color to use?

ginger821 my son likes a bathroom floor tile design he said he found listed on Houzz as " blaclk & white Carera basket weave tile floor. He will have a dark charcol/black cabinet. Where do I find this look?

agoldsmith02 @Pam Moore what is the tile on your shower walls. Can you send me a link? That was exactly what we were thinking of doing with our shower walls but haven't found the perfect tile. Also, did you use the basket weave on the entire floor? And is it polished or honed? Thanks for the help!

Pam Moore @agoldsmith02, The tile used on the shower walls is Castello Beige Porcelain Tile. Here is the link: http://www.flooranddecoroutlets.com/s12102014.html#. The website indicates 3 color tones; the box ours came in indicates that the color is Beige. The tile workers cut the tiles in half, to provide a brick-shaped appearance instead of squares. We also used another type of tile for an accent band about 5 feet from the shower floor. If you would like information on it, I'll see if I can find that as well.

Pam Moore @chrisdomf, I'm sorry I didn't reply to your question earlier, but this is the first time I've seen it. I think the basketweave would have been beautiful on the bathroom floor, but I most likely would not have repeated it on the shower floor. As it turns out, I really like the way it feels on my bare feet in the shower. Also, we had been leaning toward hardwood floors in the bathroom itself, which is what we ended up with, and we're happy with those. It's just a warmer feeling than a tile floor, but that's just personal preference. IMHO, the basketweave tile floors in the above pictures are beautiful, we just decided to go with hardwood on the floors because it provides a nice contrast to all the tile in the room.

Mary Millard I just bought a 1X2 basketweave mosaic but would like to lay it on a 90*
angle. None of the pictures show that. Is it not possible? My tile is sandstone....I had to pick up a stock tile because of timing. My original desire was herringbone, and I thought the angle would satisfy that. I love all of your bathroom. Mine is small..40 sq feet, but I'm excited to see how it turns out.

ds design studio @Mary, I have not seen this done, but can't think of a reason why it wouldn't work.Lay it out at a 90 degree angle and see how it looks.
