Because it's almost back-to-school time, I started thinking about my own college digs. My dorm room was ugly — as in, burgundy and hunter green ugly. Of course, those were the days before design sites for inspiration. I thought it would be fun to shop around for what I might use if I were to get a dorm room do-over. Here's a roundup of 20 cool and colorful products that would make any dorm room a little more fun. — Emily from Emily A. Clarke
These wire baskets are great for storage. I would fill them with towels, linens or magazines. They could even make a stylish trash can beside the desk.
These storage cubes are perfect for hiding clutter or storing books and papers. They come in a variety of colors and fit perfectly on a cubby-style bookcase.
Since dorm rooms are usually tight, this clamp lamp is perfect for providing task light while not taking up valuable desk space. Plus, the metal finish adds a nice industrial feel.
I love this simple pillow. Even if you don't have room for lots of accessories, this adds just the right amount of color to a twin bed or accent chair.
olldbobbi OH, the yellow print desk chair! It's about time desk chairs had something interesting about them AND some color! Not everything about the office needs to be black or gray!
mcj_bsc No one would actually use half of these things because they are so expensive...It would have been neat to see some more practical items. College students don't usually have $130 to spend on some wire baskets.
anetzky At most large, state schools (like my alma mater University Wisconsin-Madison), space is REALLY tight. Almost all dorm rooms require lofted beds. I think there should be more shelving and space-saving ideas.
danablanton I love all of it! Spendy, perhaps, but quality stuff that can transition to that off campus apartment or post-college pad. I'm thinking of redoing my teenage daughter's room with some of these items, which she can then take with her to college when it's time.
Emma I Art Student I Nature Lover I agree with msj_bsc too. I'm about to decorate my dorm and half of this stuff can't be used in a dorm or way too expensive!
cclark1972 Thanks, Emily, for the inspiration. A lot of these items are diy-able or can be found for less. It's always fun to look at the "what I'd really like to have" to spark our imagination and then go on fun treasure hunts for their more affordable look-alikes. Emily is a very savvy shopper and often creates looks for less based on expensive inspiration pieces.
Emily A. Clark Just thought I would chime in here. . . I promise my own dorm room (13 years ago!) was a big mess--as I admitted--and done on a super tight budget :) This was most definitely meant to be my "dream" dorm room, looking back as a married mom. I wanted to share some colorful, fun pieces that could appeal to all ages.
And, I'm definitely about decorating on a bargain in real life. I share a lot of these ideas on my blog, if you want to check it out: www.emilyaclark.com But, it's nice to dream every now and then--isn't it? :)
vashonmama With these things, yours would be the party room for sure! The ottoman idea is great- particularly if it's a storage ottoman. Nothing like a guest chair/foot rest/file cab in a tight space. Last year at TJ Maxx, you doubters, $19.99. Fixing up dorm room for daughter #3 in a few weeks. Love the bright ideas, some of which you can DIY.
Dwell by Cheryl Interiors Great ideas Emily, as always! Many of which are easily duplicatable on any budget for those students looking for design on a dime ideas. Funny enough, I was awarded best decorated dorm room 2 years in a row. They used it for prospective student tours. It was awful by todays standards but, Talk about foreshadowing....
