As a mom, interior designer, and blogger I am lucky enough to have work that allows me to be productive from home. I am proud of my dedicated home office, but I often find myself bringing the laptop to the dining room or in front of the TV to be with my family and get the best of both worlds. How do others work from home? Aren't you curious?
This is the idealized image for me of what working from home "feels" like: a sunny spot at the family table where you are present with your loved ones but also able to produce work. (Idealized being the key word.)

For many, it's hard to concentrate with so much activity around. So the other version of an ideal home office is a separate space, permanent and highly organized, such as this built-in desk and shelving unit.

| I am drooling over this efficient modern work space. It is open to the family life taking place around it, but is also a specialized area where concentrated work can get done. Custom design work is key to getting high performance from the smallest space — and it looks really good too. |
| Here's another equally appealing example of a small built-in desk that provides maximum efficiency and storage in an otherwise unused nook. There is semi-privacy for concentrated work by having the desk tucked deep into the nook, but it is still open and connected to the kitchen. Win-win. |

I appreciate how this user found a way to have the work space integrated with the wine storage space. When you are short on square footage, creativity flourishes and unique solutions are born.

This cute, vintage built-in nook is on the very small side. I don't know that actual work takes place at the old typewriter, but a vignette creates a story to this little area of the house. And the work surface is there to swap out the typewriter with a laptop.
Update: thanks to the Houzz community for educating me about the story behind this space, I want to apologize for me insensitivity. That is not a typewriter but a Braille writer for a young blind girl. The alphabet hanging above the desk is the Braille alphabet. And now it all makes so much more sense as highly functional space, not just decorative. | The idea of desks in the bedroom have already been examined on Houzz, but I will just add my two cents. When it's done right it seems preconceived, such as this desk unit relating to the bed and the wood accent wall, all made of the same wood finish and designed with the other elements in mind. A stunning light above completes the look of this well planned modern work/sleep room. |

My dream home office: a special spot in the house like a converted attic that allows enough room for personal touches such as a loveseat, a rug, Chinese garden stool end tables, decorative accessories and bookshelves. Cozy and professional, one would not be embarrassed to bring a client by for meetings.
