2. Snag a painting or oversize photograph (at a reasonable price). Thankfully, the art world is ushering in a new era of affordable style from fledgling artists and photographers, spearheaded by innovative sites like 20x200, Etsy and Zatista, among others. Small prints are great too, but adding just one oversize piece to the mix can elevate an entire space. Product pick: Available at 20x200, this oversize piece by photographer Christian Chaize would make a stunning focal point in any room.
5. Create coziness with a painted ceiling. For some reason, most of us don't give much thought to color on the ceiling, opting for basic white or matching the wall color. But a rich, contrasting hue on the ceiling can add a sense of depth and warmth in a wonderfully subtle way, perfect for bedrooms and living rooms.

6. Transform your room with an amazing pendant light. Simply swapping out the standard-issue ceiling light with a stylish pendant takes a perfectly nice but rather plain white or neutral room and makes it feel intentionally designed. Don't be afraid to invest in lighting, even if you rent — you can always take it with you when you move.

To do away with my dark corners I bought 2 inexpensive flouresent light fixtures. The kind you usually see in garages. I fixed one to the underside of my wallhung closets and put one on top. Normally this type of lighting is not recomended but because I chose the soft lighting type and the light is indirect it works really well and cost me less than $40. Also because you can see the floor all the way to the wall the room feels soo much bigger.
Oh one last tip: the owl on the closet door came from a plastic shopping bag - no adhesive just cut out wipe with wet rag and place. Dead easy and $0 spent. Here's what I did: http://ploefff.wordpress.com/2011/03/13/gratis-sticker/
The bag had an owl printed on each side so the other one I glued to a piece of cardboard to make som 3D art - still at a $0 price tag since I found the cardboard.
The addition of lighting in a curio cabinet, a wall unit or over a favourite piece of artwork is something to keep in mind as well. It is amazing the ambience it can add to a poorly lit room. Also, being a textile junkie I totally agree with you that they can definitely personalize a home.
P.S: Grace's Blog (Design Sponge) is one of my favourite to visit. IMO she is such a creative visionary.
