This weekend I challenge you to find alternative uses for your blankets, throws and quilts. Oftentimes we take for granted their colors, textures and intricate patterns and focus more on their function — especially during the winter. While you may not need them for warmth in the upcoming months, they can definitely serve an alternative function as room decor.
This ideabook provides a jump-start to finding new ways to decorate with blankets, throws and quilts. Some of the suggestions in the images below may be familiar to you, the others, eye opening and new. After all, our Houzz readers are a creative bunch. Take a look and see.

Getting creative with throws can yield beautiful results. This white wing chair trimmed in black piping is gorgeous on its own, but when paired with a double dose of throws draped across the back and threaded through the seat cushion, the piece sings a livelier tune.

Wrapping your neutral headboard in a printed throw allows you to introduce a new decor theme in your bedroom. Here, the throw leans toward a bohemian feel. But when the homeowners are feeling a little more French-y, they could replace the throw with a lovely toile one instead.

| This looks like a larger-scaled version of the above technique. Tossing what almost looks like a matching blanket over a ceiling-height headboard not only adds a sense of grandeur to the bedroom but also serves as a plush backdrop in this cocoon of cozy. |

Can't get enough of a quilt you purchased on your last travel excursion? Display your work of art in a custom frame for year-round enjoyment.
For a less expensive method of quilt display, hang it on a drapery rod. With a quilt like this there are infinite color palette options. Have fun and experiment with various combinations is this room — there's no way you can go wrong using this quilt as a guide.

Rev up your antique furniture with a jolt of bold pattern and dramatic color. A patchwork blanket creates visual interest and complements the accompanying accent pillows.

| Choose a peachy cashmere throw for a subtle hint of color and a bit of everyday indulgence. In this photo, the throw helps to soften the look of the wooden chair, but in daily living it may be tossed across your shoulders or cover your lap for added warmth during the thermostat wars.

ellie48 This is a great post. Thanks for reminding us about how we can use throws and blankets. Picture no. one is so pretty. The fabric on sofa in picture no. 4 is exquisite. That whole vignette is elegant. Thank you so much.

Erika Ward - Erika Ward Interiors So glad you liked it. I was a bit nervous writing about blankets and quilts in the Spring, but I really believe in the information I provided. Thanks ellie48!

Fl!p Breskin Don't forget throw rugs. Cat proof even against a cat that picks on the couch back. That rug has been on the couch for 20 years. Durability plus beauty plus coziness.

maxima It's funny that I should come across this Ideabook today since I was searching for a throw that I could use as a tablecloth. I've used a quilted throw before in my dining room and it looks great. It has a lot more texture than all the tablecloths you see in the stores, and it is much more budget friendly than the high-end linens. Thanks for posting!

nasafemme Great ideabook. I have several fringed throws like the one on the bench in picture #1. I just can't figure out to fold them to get that casually tossed effect. Any ideas?

Susan Peters We use our blankets and throws to cover up in winter. One is an off brand snuggie that matches with nothing. The other is an afghan my neighbor make from yarn scraps. Neither is decorative, attractive, nor the right shade or color. They're functional. That's all. That's all you need!
