Houzz Interview: Maria's Dreamy Whites

I have always admired people that decorate with whites and still manage to keep it gorgeous when they have kids. Maria who has five children is one of these talented people.
In the middle of a horse ranch in California, Maria keeps renovating and decorating their family nest, turning it into a stylish white kingdom. "I have an addiction to painting everything white" says Maria, "and hope to show other moms that living with white can be done!".

Maria was kind enough to share her home with us, and to answer a few of our questions about her style and how she goes about the decorating process. She also added many beautiful photos into her houzz account which she created a few weeks ago. You can enjoy all of her photos here.

I'm very happy to introduce you today to Maria and her charming blog Dreamy Whites.

Please tell us about your "first meeting" with your house
My husband is a horse trainer and we live on a horse ranch. Our boss was nice enough to buy us a new modular home to live in.  He actually let us pick it out!  When we picked it out we chose a home that had a lot of windows, high ceilings, and an open floor plan.

You live in a modular home- please tell us more about it
Our home is a manufactured home, which means it was built at a factory. It was brought to the site in 3 pieces and then assembled.  Modular homes are a cheaper way to go if you can't afford to build a house.  I love the modular home we live in.

What was the biggest renovation challenge you faced?
I wanted our modular home to have the feel of an old renovated farmhouse.  My husband did simple things like adding 100 year old ceiling tin to the living room recessed ceiling area.  He also added trim around the windows and doorways. I think those little improvements have made a big difference in creating the feel of an old farmhouse.

What are your favorite styles and colors?
My favorite styles are French Farmhouse (like the old farmhouses in Provence), Shabby Chic, and Coastal Cottage.  I have so many different styles that I like though.  My favorite colors are white, gray, and sea glass blue.

A spot in your house that makes you very happy/proud
I really like how our living room feels with the sectional. I didn't decorate this room overnight.  It has taken me a number of years to get this room to feel the way I wanted it to feel.   I really wanted it to have a french farmhouse feel mixed with a little bit of Shabby Chic.  I think I have finally accomplished the look I was going for, at least for me.

Your precious accessory/furniture/art
My favorite accessory in my home is the chandelier hanging over our sectional.  I found it for a great price, and probably won't ever find another one for that good of a deal.  I think it would make any room look great.

Your next house project
My husband is going to be adding 100 year old tin to the recessed ceiling area in our bedroom.  I can't wait.

5 things that houzz readers need to know about you and your blog
1. I am a mother of five kids and hope to show other moms that living with white can be done!
2. I love the french farmhouse (like a farmhouse in Provence) look mixed with a little bit of shabby chic.
3. I also share a lot of ways of incorporating splashes of color amongst an all white decor.
4. I love to feature other bloggers who share the same interests.
5. My interests include photography, graphic design, designing for weddings, and interior design.  I am full of all kinds of ideas for decorating a home, and hope to share them on my blog.

Last but not least: as a houzz friend, Maria has chosen a Pottery Barn giveaway gift card to one of the lucky readers that will share their thoughts about her house and interview.

Thank you for sharing your beautiful home Maria!

For your chance to win the $50 Pottery Barn gift card selected by Maria, comment on this interview by Sunday, April 18, at 5pm EST.

sommersbreeze It's interesting that the white with contrasting colors actually give a calming effect. As an antique dealer, I have just switched over to buying and selling whites, wire baskets, heavy linens and the types of objects that you decorate with. Viewing your pictures inspired me. And I realized that I am over stocking my antique spaces. The way you decorate draws attention to each object...interesting!
Thank you for the inspiration!

I love the whites, but I have dogs that are inside, then outside, then inside...you get where I am going? I'm afraid my furniture would look like the "dog print pattern". I also own a black cat, which of course means black hair. Oh well, I like to imagine having an all white interior! I've included a few pictures from my home...Marcia

barefootbeachchic What an inspiration you are, Maria! Thank you for sharing your incredible home, your beautiful photos, and giving all of us "dreamers-of-white" out here some wonderful ideas. I recently did a 'beach-cottage-redo' in my 1895 farmhouse and am loving it! (Since I live 3min away from 3 different lakes, I can justify that, right? lol!) I used creamy white and khaki with touches of robin's egg blue here and there. So when I saw how you used the calming ocean blue and sea green throughout your home, I was inspired even more. And thanks for the giveaway! :) Hugs!

Gaelle Nicloux-Barnett Hey Adi

Great interview. I've been following Maria for a little while now, but it's true, I'm mostly very quiet and don't make much comments on her blog - shame on me - . I'm sorry about that Maria, I will from now.

I love her house, and I was amazed the first time I visited it, 5 kids and white?! I have 4 brothers, so 5 kids for my mom, but unfortunatly we haven't been so respectfull with her house. We played outside in the snow or the dirt and then "forgot" to take shoes off before entering .... Well Maria, congratulations for your interview on Houzz!

mlholeman I was so excited to see that Maria lives in a manufactured home. It sounds like a triple-wide--and I live in a single-wide, so she has much more space than I; but she's certainly made it beautiful. Thanks so much for sharing.
spike266 What an accomplishment! 1) I would not expect such a sense of age in a new manufactured home. 2) How did you convince your "manly-man" horse trainer husband to try living in a bright-airy space (mine wants a "cabiny-lodge look"), and 3) nary a hand-print, stray water color brush stroke, sticky-mark or schmear to be found. (Do you have dogs? Can't seem to keep the schmoogers off the windows, and am looking for a hint). I am in awe!

ladolcevitagal I love the chippy white pitcher...nothing makes flowers look more at home than a chippy white pitcher. Thanks for sharing this great interview!

patricia24 In a world of cookie-cutter manufactured homes lacking individuality, Maria thinks outside of the box. She doesn't let it restrict her creativity, her ability to create a space that reflects who she is. And in doing so, she inspires others to do the same. I think she is a great example for all women who want to make their space a home that's all their own. Truly inspirational!

yesi I too am a lover of all white. I follow Maria's blog-dreamy whites. It is blogs like these that inspire me to design. I enjoy the clean, elegant and yet comfy look of her home. I recently finished my very own all white master bedroom and now find myself obsessing with white.

ashleylynnfry Oh my. Oh my. OH MY! So stunning. This is exactly what I'd like my house to look like... I've never really decorated with whites/greys until I fell in love with the colors for home decor via various blogs & now that we are moving to a new house it is my plan to do the whole place in lots of whites/greys! Only problem is I don't know which to choose- who knew there were so many shades of white!? Any recommendations anyone? Maria would you be willing to share the paint colors/brand you have used in your home? LOVE IT!!

Kaila Gatz I just stumbled upon Dreamy Whites and I love Maria's style! I let out a yelp when I saw the use of the worn ladder. I pulled an old worn ladder from our garage that was left by the previous owner and stuck it our living room. It now holds our books and magazines. My husband thought I was crazy. I showed him the beautiful pictures of your beautiful room creations and am slowly warming him up to the idea of my vintage-eclectic-farmhouse style. Thank you for the inspiring pictures and interview.

SusieQ Contrarian me. To each his/her own; I think this is a bit prissy and cluttered with old stuff. In Maria's hands, some of it is admittedly cute, but it could easily get kitschy and just look cluttered if you don't use some restraint with this old-stuff-look. That ladder looks absurd inside!

lynndriver I just saw your home in BHG and loved it! I have 5 kids, too, and we also homeschool. I can so relate to your statement about wanting to be at home together as a family and "totally living" in your house. Your style reflects that, and it is still definitely dreamy!

coastalcottagehome Maria, I absolutely love your living room... and that couch! We have purchased a little beach cottage and I am in the throes of seeking the very style you have. I have had second thoughts because I purchased a white couch and my two boys have managed to make it a lovely shade of gray, with spots of red popsicle dye for color. I would genuinely love to hear how you keep your white couch and home clean with 5 kids. Gorgeous home and I am going to your website right now. :)
