A Mod Nursery Has Twice the Appeal
Sharing is caring in this bedroom designed for a toddler and a baby, with appealing graphical elements and plenty of room to play
Interior designer Emily Mughannam's clients needed their kids to share one room in their San Francisco home, but the kids' different ages made for a design challenge: The nursery needed to be stimulating enough for a toddler while being serene enough for a 5-month-old. The result is a room that is fun, exciting and appealing to both children — and their parents, who love the sophisticated yet entirely playful mod look of the room.

Mughannam picked out a pair of Oeuf Sparrow cribs in walnut; they easily convert to toddler beds. She placed them against the walls, creating more floor space in the center of the room for play. Plush carpeting and tactile throws are easy on a crawling baby's knees and cushion the fall of a speedy toddler.

"They wanted the space to coordinate with the rest of the adult home, so we kept the nursery clean and modern," says Mughannam. "My clients also wanted the room to be completely presentable when the door is left open, so the furnishings inside the space can easily be found in someone's living room or bedroom. It doesn't scream 'baby.'"

Nursery shelving (previous photo) houses family photos, playful curios and often-used books for nighttime reading. A favored sock monkey moves over to the 2-year-old's bed at night, joining a travel pillow.

| Breakable items are out of reach on higher shelves, or in the dresser or closet, so little hands can't grab them. Lower-level items have softer edges or are entirely for the kids. "The clients like a lot of white and gray, which is evident in the rest of the house, but they also enjoy the occasional pop of bright color for accents and art," says Mughannam.
