Or have a custom pan made to hold items like fresh herbs, wine, oil and vinegar in a kitchen island countertop. It's a great way to get things off of the counters, and even though they're in the counters, it creates a sense of calm through its intention. Organization is very psychological — it's about making things look as if they have a place or are meant to be there.
Integrated with other wall cabinets. If you are going to incorporate a plate rack into other regular wall cabinets, think about making them glass so that the whole wall has a sense of openness and depth. Don't be afraid to show off your dishes, glassware and other kitchen stuff - it doesn't all have to match!
Unfitted and over the sink. This is a pretty typical location for a plate rack. Not only does it feel more open than a cabinet with solid doors, but it's at the perfect spot for unloading the dishwasher and putting plates away. I love the size and scale of this one and the fact that it's unfitted, or floating in the center of the wall. This gives it the look of being something inherited or found rather than designed with the cabinets (even if it was!).

This is not some persnickity matchy-matchy Martha Stewart arrangement of copper pans and the like, yet it is equally pleasing. It's a great example of how a closet/pantry organization company and/or kitchen designer can help you out in the long run.
