Idea of the Week: Hostess Stools
A Few Well-Placed Stools Offer Quick Seats When Entertaining Guests
We'd never heard of this phrase before, but after seeing a few in the formal dining room of Meredith Heron's beautiful Toronto renovation, our interest was piqued. So what is a "hostess stool," anyway?

These spare seats offer a place for the host to perch for a moment before alighting back to the kitchen, refilling drinks or changing the music. As Heron describes it, "When entertaining, the host rarely sits, but when they do they can pull up one of these little stools for a quick chat."

Here they act as a makeshift coffee table when not otherwise in use. Hostess or no, it's nice to have extra seating close at hand when company calls!

Katya Popova We have always been struggling with seating when it comes to large groups of guests. I picked these up at a local store for a very reasonable price and they add charm and rustic feel to our living room. And additional seating!

cindypenkoff I love the idea of this room. The colors, the soothing "nature" and the layout. This could be done on a different scale to add comfortable to the description.

Denise Vilim Interesting! I've just always called them vanity stools and there's one sitting at my vanity now. These stools really are quite versatile and handy to have around. So lightweight, you can take them practically anywhere.

Modern Country Lady Love the fabric - BUT : I would rather put those pretty stools to the left and right of the chest of drawers in the room for any additional seating when required..Think about an ottoman in the middle instead which can function as a seat AND also as a table! Another thought is: IF the host or hostess would grab a quick seat, surely not right in the middle of the group- would he or she not sit facing one part of the group and showing his or her back the other aprt of the group !! Or swing his or her attention madly form one to the other - It just seems too complicated.

Molto Bene Studios Our seating consists of two couches and 4 ottomans arranged in a semicircle facing the couches but we have a coffee table too. So I get the concept -- the ottomans are great for perching. Not sure I would place them in the middle of the seating arrangement for the reasons stated above.

Lily Gahagan Interesting perspectives! I thought the stools were there to pick up and move to anywhere they might be needed — maybe the host or hostess would scoot one out to the edge of the arrangement between the armchair and sofa or something. And when the stools aren't in use, they're kind of hiding in plain sight.

Debra Carrillo Whether it's ottomans or stools they are great to have around and through out the room. They come especially handy when family and kids come around. You can pull them out or change it's place and play game boards with the kids. They are great for small spaces too.

cgoocher Where would the guests sitting on the sofa place their beverage? I don't see tables next to the sofa.
