| This house, according to the architects, "presents raw, honest materials appropriate to the grittiness of the Venice [California] environment." The corner lot is defined by a wall composed of various materials, each one reiterated in the house's design. Walls of Cor-Ten steel are visible behind this wall and retractable awnings hang on a steel frame. A closer look... |
Although not a fan of always-staining-fingertips-red rust, the Cor-Ten used in these photos is beautiful.
I also love the large tree in the third photo! Any idea what it might be?
Thanks!
Whatever it is, you're right, it is gorgeous! Thanks!
"This is a Cypress. Given that this project is California coastal, I am going to assume Monterey Cypress (Cupressus macrocarpa). These are actually my favorite trees. I love what the wind does to their form."
Thanks!!
Interestingly, on U.S. Steel's web page (http://www.uss.com/corp/construction/cor-ten-azp.asp), they say, "COR-TEN® steel sheet products should not be sold when the intended use is for an architectural application, such as roofing and siding." Architects and builders do not always heed this advice, as the above shows, but it goes to show that the detailing of the application needs to be done carefully to avoid the corrosive effects of the Cor-ten affecting nearby materials and assemblies.

Great write up about corten steel. Would you recommend corten steel to be used in tropical area where the area would rain 2 to 3 times a week? Will the rust from the steel start corroding?
