Miss Mustard Seed- Living Room
Miss Mustard Seed
by potterybarn.com
A few weeks ago, I came across several beautiful guest room photos uploaded to houzz by one of the users. I really liked the vintage decor so I was curious to find out who was the designer of this charming bedroom. This is how I found Miss Mustard Seed.

Marian lives in a small town near Gettysburg, PA with her youth pastor husband and their two toddler boys.
"I have always loved decorating and it has been one of my passions and primary hobbies for many years" says Marian in her blog Miss Mustard Seed. "In 2008, my family encouraged me to turn my hobby into a business and thus Mustard Seed Creations was born. When I'm not working on pieces for the shop or custom orders for clients, I am busy decorating my own home, building train sets with my boys, and working in ministry with my husband."

I'm very happy to introduce you today to Marian and her blog Miss Mustard Seed.

Please tell us about your "first meeting" with your house -What was the biggest renovation/decoration challenge you faced?

My home was not a "love at first site" kind of event. It was more of a "this house is less of a dump than the other houses we could afford", so we bought it by default. The original part of the home was built in the 1940s and an addition was added in 2002. The original part of the home had not been updated or cared for at all and the new part of the home was builder grade everything, unfinished, and not at all my taste.

The biggest project we've worked on so far was refinishing the floors in the original part of the house. I was five months pregnant at the time and it was quite an undertaking. One of the toughest challenges we face moving forward is getting a more cohesive look between old & new and defining some rooms that were left with an identity crisis after the addition was put on (like the former kitchen.)

What inspired you when you designed your guest bedroom?

This room was truly a happy accident. I was a part of a design competition and was challenged to design something for my home from a hardware store. The idea of creating the look of an exposed board wall stuck with me, so that became the jumping off point for the room. With no budget for redecorating the room, I had to use what was on hand. That included using a can of "oops" paint I purchased for a $1.00, fabric from a remnant bin, and pieces from elsewhere in my home. As everything came together, I realized that I had perfectly captured my style in one room. It is French Country meets American Farmhouse with a little junk thrown in.

Your favorite styles and colors

I grew up in Germany and traveling Europe as a child definitely influenced my design taste today. I am drawn to hand painted furniture, antiques, and anything French Country. Blue & white is my favorite color scheme, but I love reds, yellows, and aqua as well.

A spot in your house that makes you very happy/proud -What is your most precious accessory/furniture/art

I am really proud of our refinished hardwood floors. We did all of the work ourselves and for under $200 we totally transformed the look of our home and added value to it. I have to say I am proud of my guest room as well. The look is totally "me" and I did everything on my own, from sewing the curtains and pillows to refinishing the furniture, to creating the exposed board wall.

I have a lot of beautiful and special family pieces, so it’s hard to choose one that is my favorite. I think the rocking chair my grandmother had as a child would have to be close to the top of the list. Over four generations of toddlers in my family used that chair, so it's very precious to me.

What is your next house project?

Our next endeavor is making built-ins for the former kitchen to turn it into a home office. It’s basically a glorified hallway at this point, so built-ins are a perfect way to make the room functional.

5 things that houzz readers need to know about your blog -What is your best tip for the remodeling beginner?

I am a real "open book" on my blog. I share all of my tips, tricks and techniques in the hopes of being an inspiration to others.

All of my makeovers, projects, and decorating ideas are executed on a tight budget, but I never want anything to look like it.

I am a "Jill-of-all-trades", so I post tutorials on everything from gold leafing to sewing, decorative painting to woodworking.

I have a weekly link party on Friday where people can share their furniture projects and makeovers. It's a great place to visit if you are a furniture lover.

Lastly, I have two toddlers living in my home and teenagers who come over often, so my home and décor are realistic, comfortable and beautiful.

My best tip for a remodeling beginner is to learn how to paint. Paint is one of the cheapest and easiest ways to entirely change the look and feel of a room or a piece of furniture.

Last but not least: as a houzz friend, Marian has chosen a Pottery Barn giveaway gift card to one of the lucky readers that will share their thoughts about her house and interview.

Thank you for sharing your charming guest room and beautiful home Marian!

For your chance to win a $50 Pottery Barn gift card, comment on this interview by Sunday, May 15, at 5pm EST.

I love the furnishings! and the guest room! it looks so comfy!
rustyboy says:
Like Miss Mustard Seed, we bought our house based on what we could afford in this location. It didn't take long to realize I really didn't like this house at all. We got busy with raising our family and working and I just "got used" to living here and always thought that when the kids were older we would move. Fast forward 20 years and we are still in our 500 square foot "cottage".
Thanks to blogs like yours I now feel a renewed passion for my home and am making it the best it can be, but more importantly, what I want it to be. I am so glad you were interviewed because I can now add your blog to my list of those few I go to for inspiration! After all if you can refinish hardwood floors at 5 months pregnant, I have no exuses not to tackle mine :)
Many thanks for sharing your ideas and your home.

What a beautiful home you've made for your family!
brisena says:
It looks really nice and comfortable your home, Marian. It seems to me like a mixture of american and european style. Love it, gorgeous!
I've been following your blog for a few months and its absolutely my favorite! As a Decorative artist myself, I love how you add hand painted touches to personalize things and give them new life. The mix of French country, German, and Pennsylvania dutch is all done with such beautiful simplicity, charm, and character! You have inspired me to start adding more of those touches again to my own home! Thanks for sharing your time and talents!!
I'm a follower of your blog and your guest room design is my favorite. It might be that I have an obsesson with red. But I also love the fan, baby dress, wire basket. It all takes me back to a time way before my time. Beautiful.
I totally agree with Marian when she says that the first thing to learn, when remodelling, is to paint. I remember telling my husband, when I first visited our present home: "I found our house! Don't look at the colours, they are awful, but I will repaint it all"... which I did, in pure white, from floor to ceiling, adding accent colours here and there.
You were lucky not to have had enough money to purchase the house of your dreams... the lack of money obliges us to be creative. When I had my first child, I was twenty years old, pursuing studies at the University of Nice, France, and working. So, I had no money to spend on furniture, or to remodel our tiny apartment... I had to learn to paint, to apply wallpaper, to add moldings, and to refinish old pieces of furniture bought at flea markets.... It was a blessing! Even today, apart from leather sofas in the living room and the family room, nothing has been bought new. I really enjoy giving back beauty to something that is old, discarded, and lifeless. It's like giving it back it's soul!
And... as I mentioned in one of my "Buzz", this creativity helped me cope, when I had to fight cancer.
Thank you, Marian, for sharing your thoughts. I enjoyed reading about you.. I noticed we both like the combination of white and blue in a decor.. and the use of Toile

Miss Mustard Seed (Marian), you rock!!! More than just decorating, I can tell from these pictures, this is about how to live a beautiful life. We have 6 people living in a 1000 sq.ft. bungalow and those teenagers just keep getting bigger - go figure. Sometimes it is hard to get inspired but I will definitely be checking out your blog:)

i'm a big fan of marian's. her blog is on my daily "reading" list.
Great job! The home is beautiful, and doesn't look budget at all!
What an inviting guest room, I would love to stay there! And the chalkboard is a great touch.
Such a beautiful, warm, inviting home. Marian's house demonstrates so well how you don't have to stick with just one style to have a great home. She has taken bits and pieces of different decor styles she loves and and combined them into "Marian's Style." That is what makes her house unique and appealing, along with her natural ability to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear! : ) And I agree with Marian's comment about paint; oh, what a difference a can of paint can make in a room or on a piece of furniture, kitchen cabinets. brick, etc. A great way to change and update a home.
What a great, individualized home -- it is so beautiful and so personal. Joni
I love her style and will definitely be checking out her blog!

Marian's blog is just another fine example of what you can do with a little (or a lot) of imagination and, as always, elbo-grease! Aw, the thing that masterpieces are made of! I love the idea of repurposing. I don't like to throw out potential "treasure" so as a result, I do have awide variety of supplies waiting for just the right time to be transformed. as i look at blogs such as Marian's, they give me new ideas to to use some of my "stuff" to create and to help the earth by not adding to landfills!

Love Miss Mustard Seed and her blog! She definitely deserves this feature!
kharris says:
What a lovely guestroom! It feels a trifle "staged" - I don't mean this in a totally negative way, and I am trying to think of a better word; there's a sense of serenity in this space that would be welcome in a guestroom, but I cannot imagine it being a living space with a passel of boys. In my house, this would look contrived -- but in this space, with the light and the sense of age, the vintage feel is a little more at-home.
I love the clean and fresh feel!
Loved this when I saw it on the blog, and am loving it all over again!

That red drape fabric is smokin' hot! LOVE IT! It amused me to see that "Gasthaus" sign over the bed b/c there is a little German restaurant near my beach home that is called 'Horst Gasthaus', and I had never heard that word used anywhere else. Love the gym basket too. Very nice makeover.
