It's usually a good thing when a room is described as roomy or spacious, but when you begin to experiment with various furniture arrangements, achieving the ideal placement gets a little tricky. Too much furniture on one side of the room can leave the space feeling unbalanced. Too little furniture will make the space feel more like a gallery or a place to do somersaults, depending upon the maturity level of your housemates.
This ideabook gives functional and attractive ways to get the most out of your generous square footage by creating multiple conversation areas within one room.

In this furniture plan, a white Barcelona chair allows one to be included in the conversation because of its proximity to the green sectional, yet it maintains a sense of privacy when one opts out of the discussion.

A double living space provides opportunity for each room to serve an independent function while maintaining an open floor plan. In this room, a table divides the two spaces while simultaneously providing usage in both areas.

This great room really lives up to its name. Boasting four conversation areas, when split in half one side clearly mirrors the other. Symmetry is the key to dividing a room with a square or rectangular shape.

Twin, tufted-back sofas centered on an angled area rug draw an imaginary line between two distinct seating areas, with both using the fireplace as a focal point. This is a textbook example of floating furniture and maintaining symmetry and scale.

In addition to furniture arrangement, area rugs also help to delineate a space. Area rugs anchor the furniture and signify a seating area within a seating area.

| In this space, the furniture plan, area rugs and accent wall work in tandem to define the warm atmosphere. The shape of the sofa as well as common fabrics, such as leather and chenille, also help to unify the room's decor.

katetherate Thank you! This is something I'm trying to figure out for my living room. It's a tricky thing to do in a room that's not huge but I'm determined to have a seating area that's not oriented toward the television, somewhere we can read the paper and listen to music or have afternoon tea with guests.

Nan I've decided my living room is good for 1 1/2 areas! At first the 15x25 space seems ideal, but it's too long for just one and too short or narrow for two balanced areas. Not to mention the previous owners off-set the fireplace. In all the houses I've owned, this one is challenging! Thanks for the ideas.
