Dreaming of Red, White and Blue
It’s almost that time again...time to fire up the backyard grills and invite all our friends and family over to celebrate the Independence of our great country. Now is the ideal time for doing a little 4th of July decorating. That way, you'll have time to enjoy it before the big day comes and goes.
Recently, I was surprised to learn, the actual “legal” date of the separation of the American colonies from Great Britain was on July 2, 1776, not July 4th. It turns out that the Second Continental Congress actually cast their votes on July 2nd to approve a “resolution of independence.” Once this historic vote was behind them, Congress got busy debating, revising and finally approving the document we now know as, The Declaration of Independence. The Declaration of Independence, written by a “Committee of Five" with Thomas Jefferson as the main author, was officially approved on July 4th, 1776.
John Adams knew this historic moment would be celebrated forever. He was a couple of days off since he was going by the date Congress had voted, but here’s what he wrote to his beloved wife, Abigail:
“The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more.”
And, so it has...only instead of celebrating on July 2nd, the date Congress approved the Declaration, we celebrate on July 4th, the date recorded on the actual statement...the Declaration of Independence.
