We give so much attention to our floors — picking wood species, stain color, and tile patterns — but what about the ceiling? We should consider what the poet G. K. Chesterton said: “Lying in bed would be an altogether perfect and supreme experience if only one had a colored pencil long enough to draw on the ceiling.” Mr. Chesterton had it right. The ceiling is something to be embellished, to be made into a piece of art. It can be just as important from a design perspective as the floor. Here are 13 beautiful and interesting ceiling treatments that make a true design statement.

| Look to the skies. Consider a series of skylights to draw the eye upward and brighten a space. Notice how the shape and direction of the skylights fall in line with the doorway at the end of the space, making for a cohesive and seamless integration of the skylights into the overall design. |

| Seeing stria (and stars). I love when a theme is carried out in really subtle ways. The nubby fabric on the chairs and clean, simple stria in the ceiling treatment are mirrored in the large-scale "stripe" of the birch tree wallpaper. Punches of red make the room complete. |

Star appeal. While this room is a perfect study in how to mix patterns and colors, it's all about the gold-leafed starburst mirror installed on the ceiling. This becomes the real star of the room.

Curves are in. The small barrel ceiling-within-a-ceiling adds height while breaking up the square lines in this bathroom. It provides a wonderful opportunity for a lovely light fixture to live and brighten our day.
Heavy metal. Sometimes the simplest treatment can have the greatest impact. The industrial feeling of these warm gray metal beams bring color and warmth to the space, enhancing the exposed brick and others materials of the space.
High ho, Silver! These gray wood beams are carried throughout the entire space, bringing in a rustic element to this otherwise modern home. Cleverly, the space between the beams line up with the closet doors, adding another interesting design element. Simple stunning design, all the way around.
