How to Add Sunny Yellow Touches to your Home

I work as a blogger for businesses although I do a variety of different types of writing. I particularly enjoy writing about all aspects of design and creativity. I think that your home should reflect your personality and that it should change as you change. More about me at www.kathrynvercillo.com and http://diaryofasmartchick.com.

Yellow has always been one of my favorite colors for decorating my home. It instantly brings a feeling of sunniness and optimism into any space. Unfortunately, a lot of people shy away from using yellow in their decorating. They seem to be afraid that it's going to come off looking too garish.

The truth is that you can go really wrong with yellow in the home. The wrong shade of yellow can cast an ugly glow over the house and make everything in it look a little bit sickly. Too much yellow and you may find yourself feeling a bit jittery when sitting in the space.

However, it's not actually that difficult to do yellow right. First, you want to make sure to choose a bright and bold yellow. Avoid soft yellows and pastels. Stay away from anything that hints of neon. Then make sure that you don't overdo it. Yellow should be used for pieces of a room but not for the whole room. Done correctly, you can give yourself a bubbly new space with just a hint of this great color.
I happen to think that the kitchen is one of the best places to decorate with yellow. It's a place where you want to be awake and feel alive. Yellow does that for you. Choosing bright yellow appliances or kitchen cabinets brings the sunshine into your cooking area.

Another way to add yellow to a kitchen is to include a yellow kitchen island like the one we see here. The rest of the room is fairly neutral in color so the kitchen island stands out without overpowering your senses.

Many people find it difficult to incorporate big yellow pieces like a kitchen island into their design. Another option is to go with smaller pieces that are still bold. The yellow sculptural art on the wall here is the key part of the design. It's complimented by the yellow trim of the wall and the yellow accents on the table.

A bold piece of yellow art is another simple way to bring this color into a room. This is particularly great when set against such a dark background because it brings light into the space.

Another way to achieve the same effect is to choose just one piece of furniture to get in bright yellow. Here we have bright yellow dining room chairs. They stand out in the room and make the whole place look fun!

A little bit of yellow can go a long way. Painting the door of an all-white room yellow can really change the mood of the entire space. It feels so welcoming, doesn't it?!

Another way to include just a little bit of yellow is to paint only one wall in the room with this great color. Here the yellow wall is brought out a bit by the bits of yellow in the rug.

A bold yellow rug can be another way to bring yellow into the room. In this example, the rug is the main decor piece. It is highlighted by the bits of yellow in the pillow, frames and furniture here.

The use of lighting is another way to bring yellow into the room. Here the entire hallway is painted a light shade of yellow. It is made brighter by the true yellow lighting on the wall.

Here's a really interesting way to bring yellow light into the room! This one isn't as bright or bold as I would like to see but it's a nice start. A few yellow pillows on the couch or a big yellow vase on the table would help brighten it up.

If you are really bold about going yellow then you can try out some yellow wallpaper. Get something with a design on it that is of a different color (like is shown here) so that you don't completely overwhelm the space.

I think we share a brain. I was planning on doing a yellow book tonight and we've picked a ton of the same shots! I love yellow in a home, it makes me happy. I think my favorite thing in my room is my yellow donut phone.
