MIRROR MIRROR

Houzz Contributor. Hi There! I currently live in a 1920s cottage in Atlanta that I'll describe as "collected." I got into design via Landscape Architecture, which I studied at the University of Virginia. I've been writing about design online for quite a few years over at Hatch: The Design Public Blog.

Mirrors provide many of our best decorating tricks. They can visually expand a room (even to infinity - see below), reflect light, give a us a quick place to check our faces, and help with objects that aren't exactly placed in feng shui perfection. Personally, I never went so far as to start putting mirrors and crystals everywhere - that was usually the chapter of the feng shui book where I say "aw, forget it, this is too much work," but that's another story.

Houzz is chockablock full of fabulous mirror images. It's really tough to edit it down to a group of my own personal favorites, but I'm giving it a shot. If you have favorite mirror images of your own, please point them out to me in the comments section, I'd love to see them.
The clear table and chairs, the open glass to the sky, and the large mirror all make this dining area feel much larger than it actually is.
A well-placed mirror in a vestibule gives you a great spot to check yourself out before you walk out the door.
This oversized mirror really played with my sense of proportions. The first time I saw this shot, I thought that was a mini Wiggle Chair!
Here the mirrors make up an excellent room divider. Because they are separate and angled, they reflect light differently and create a mosaic effect.
This well-placed mantle mirror reflects the chandelier, tricking the eye into thinking that there might be two of them.
The next few shots are of massed mirrors. They are all fun compositions.
This porthole shaped mirror atop a mirrored wall creates a trippy infinity effect.
Here's another fun porthole shape. It adds depth to the wall.
I just really love the way the sink hardware is mounted atop the mirrored wall.
A classic round mirror is lovely over a fireplace...
...or over the bed. I think this one is really good feng shui, but I'm not sure, because I never finish the feng shui books!
Double mirrors and sinks in a bathroom add a nice symmetry and keep primping conflicts between kids (and partners!) to a minimum.
Mirror-topped dressers have a special charm. I love the photography in this shot as well; the mirror gives us a glimpse of the sailboat across the room.
Here the mirrored wall makes the room seem much bigger, and reflects the carefully arranged art collection.
These two shots show some nice alternatives to covering a bathroom wall in mirror. They both add personality and style to the space.

Becky Harris Thanks Marcy! Some of my favorites are at West Elm, Jonathan Adler, and Ballard Designs, though if you hunt a little harder, you can find great and inexpensive mirrors at WalMart, Target, Home Goods and JC Penny. Also, if you have a favorite frame, you can have a mirror cut for it at a glass store.

Olga Adler Great piece Becky! I love mirrors - every room should have at least one. That last picture reminds me of a powder room I did a while ago - see photo.
