The new school year has begun for most folks. Whether you are glad or sad about seeing your kids head back to school, this just might be the best time of year for getting some important home projects started.

| Paint a room. The perfect time to start a new paint project is when the kids won't be beneath your feet or putting their little paws on your fresh paint job. Maybe you're ready for an updated wall color in your kitchen? Because cabinetry usually takes up most of the space, you could probably knock the whole thing out in a day. |

Paint a dresser. Maybe painting a whole room isn't feasible because you work during the day. Why not tackle a smaller paint job, like your dated oak bathroom cabinetry or a tired piece of furniture? Hopefully you are putting the kids to bed earlier since school started (you are, aren't you?), so you can take on painting a small piece in the evenings. Believe it or not, this could be a relaxing way to wind down your day.

Create a mudroom space. This might be located right inside your back door or inside your garage. Make sure there is a space for each of the kiddos — and adults — to store shoes, jackets and backpacks. If they deposit those things before they enter the rest of your house, you won't be tripping over them in the afternoons.

Clean out the kids' closets. This is a great time to get your kid's closets organized — that is, while they are gone! You can weed out all the worn-out and outgrown items without your child arguing that they can still wear it. Or am I the only one who has those kind of arguments, I mean discussions, with her children?

Create a family calendar and message center. This is where everyone in the family can keep track of upcoming events and deposit notes and homework to be signed.

trasgorshek Too funny! I just refaced our fireplace and made new curtains for the dining room last week after school started. Today I'm going to grab the fabric for my sons new shower curtain. Notorious for creating projects while the kiddos are away. I've had a mental list about halfway through summer. Three canvas's sit here in my bedroom just waiting. Love this ideabook!

lizmaguire I'll be sanding the scratches out of the dining chairs and giving them a fresh coat of paint and also creating one of those pallet book racks to hang under my son's bedroom window to free up shelf space for his Lego creations.

writercook This is the time of year I try to be sure to do some mundane but needed chores that are best done outside with the garden hose, things like scrubbing out all the plastic and metal trashcans, taking the dog's crate apart and giving it a thorough cleaning, cleaning the window blinds, and and doing the same for the rubber-backed door mats. I don't necessarily enjoy these jobs, but I am so happy to have done them once the weather gets cold and we retreat indoors!

memo3 Being an empty nester for over a year now, I have come to the realization that I still need to function as if the kids are still at home in order to motivate myself to get anything done. Let's just say I took a year off after raising kids for 30 years ;) As soon as we finish refurbishing the exterior of our home and the yard, I plan to start inside one room at a time. The master bathroom remodel comes first which I'm sure will lead to updating the master bedroom. And so on and so on..... Everything should look new and fresh by next Spring!! Great ideabook, very motivating!

hockey456 I always get stressed at about 2 pm realizing I have to stop my project to pick up the kids in an hour. I try not to do many projects that demand multiple days. However, my laundry room is waiting for the cabinets to be finished in black to match the rest of the house and a folding counter to be made/installed. Don't think I can complete that by 2pm.:-)
