Guest Picks: Ssshhhhh, I'm studying!
It's almost the most wonderful time of the year in my household — well, for me as a parent, that is. My kids return to school right after Labor Day. Unfortunately, it isn't all song and dance for me because the fall semester of grad school starts next Wednesday. In addition, my husband is also returning to school full-time this semester too. Needless to say, there will be a lot of studying going on at home over the next few months. That is why this ideabook is dedicated to all things study related: desks, chairs, lighting, organization — you know, all of the things necessary to create the perfect study nook. — Michelle from Stuttering Shell
Storage Locker with Casters - $149
When I think about school, I think about my high school locker. It wasn't white or as tiny as this one, but wouldn't this make a cute addition to a home office? It would be the perfect place to stash my grad school books.
White Alden Foldout Convertible Desk - $229.99
It's like a Murphy bed, but it's a desk instead! I'll be honest, this desk is far too small to handle my chaotic (yet organized) style of filing (and studying), but it would be the perfect addition to a small study space. When you need to hit the books, just drop down the desk. When you're done, fold it all back into the wall.
Sloane Espresso Leaning Desk with 2 Bookcases - $399
I've always been a fan of the leaning bookcases, and when I first saw this desk I knew I had to have it. I love that the desk is part of a functional unit and that you can dress up your desk area so your office furniture won't stick out so much. Pair this with a cushiony chair and you've got the perfect study nook.
Bungee Office Chair | Container Store - $130
Desk chairs just aren't appealing to me, but these bungee cord chairs seem like fun, and they are supposedly very comfortable too. I love that they come in four different color choices. You know, because your study space needs to be fun!
Industrial Task Table Lamp, Tumeric - $79
Admit it: Desk lamps can be boring. But I really like this yellow lamp and think it would be both functional and fun for a good study area.
Wall-Mounted Bookcase, Tall - $259
I have some closet cubes that I use for book storage in my current office space where I study. Unfortunately, my Boston Terriers have taken it upon themselves to "read" more than once, which only resulted in shredded books on the floor. This bookshelf would be the perfect solution for me. My books will be organized and displayed in a nice way, and I won't have to clean up a shredded book ever again.
Wingate Rattan Swivel Desk Chair - $399
My current desk chair doesn't roll, and let me tell you, it stinks not being able to push myself from the computer to the file cabinet and back. I know, I know, it's lazy and superficial — but come on! I really like the look of this chair because it doesn't scream "standard desk chair." And I'm not going to lie, I could probably fall asleep in it too!
Campton Smart Technology Office Armoire, Desa Ming Red - $1,799
I love the idea of being able to close off a study space. That way, when you take a break, you're really taking a break. While armoires don't really offer a lot of desk space, they are still functional pieces that offer storage and containment of your desk area.
Jansjö LED Work Lamp - $9.99
Such a neat little work lamp would be especially useful for those late-night study sessions when you can't really have every light in the house on. I love that the neck of this lamp is adjustable, so you can point the light exactly where you need it.
Alex Drawer Unit on Casters, Black - $119
My current desk does not offer a lot of storage. I'm trying to rid my desktop of clutter, so I need a storage option that is not just functional, but keeps me organized as well. I love that this unit offers multiple drawers and is on casters.
Aviator Wing Desk - $2,195
If I had a desk that looked like this, I'm not sure how much studying I would get done because I wouldn't be able to take my eyes off of the desk. The sleek "airplane wing" design is cool, but I also love how much space the desk offers: There's enough room to spread out.
Devon Spitfire Leather Chair | Restoration Hardware - $995
What. A. Chair. I'm not sure how comfortable it would be, but maybe it really is a good study chair — you know, one you can't fall asleep in.
Element LED Touch Accent Lamp - $79.99
No, it's not a water faucet. Touch it, and you'll be showered in light, not water. It's such a cool, contemporary desk lamp. Of course, with a desk lamp like this, how much studying will you actually get done?
Mercer Armless Chair - $429
I am not opposed to using a luscious-looking chair as a desk chair. I mean, if you're sitting at a desk studying for hours, you need to be comfortable, right?
Wood and Wire Wall Multi Basket - $99
I love the look of metal and wood together, and this set would look especially sharp (and functional) mounted to the wall above a desk. It offers additional storage for books and notebooks without taking up precious desk space.
19th C. Rococo Iron & Crystal Table Lamp - $750
I'm not opposed to giving my study space some class with a fun chandelier-like table lamp. True, it's not your typical desk lamp, but it will still get the job done.
Furlicious Wingback Desk Chair - $299
Oh, hi, fuzzy chair. Your only purpose in life is to thwart my study efforts. And you know what? I'm OK with that. Seriously, I would read War and Peace if I could just sit in this chair while reading (yeah, yeah, you know I really meant sleeping).
Modular Office L-Shaped Desk Set - $849
I love an L-shaped desk. It provides so much function in such a small space. I love the minimalistic look of this desk ensemble. There are plenty of spaces to hold books, and there are three drawers for filing away papers. Plus, two desk surfaces mean more room to spread out!
Tucker White Laptop Table - $149
Bring your study area to you with this laptop desk. Your laptop fits neatly inside the small desk, so instead of being confined to a room, you can study anywhere in your home.
