Get the right composition right when hanging plates. I always try to think of them as sculptural and want to compose an arrangement that is interesting. Play with different arrangements on the floor first to come up with a good combination.

Use your stained wood casing as a jumping off point - NEVER put stained wood cabinets adjacent to stained wood casing. The contrast that a painted wood cabinet offers just can't be beat. Not a fan of cabinets-matching-the trim sort of thing.

windows wood and door casing is such a showstopper with white cabinets. Again the casing ties back to the flooring, completeing the circle.

Use your white painted casing jumping off point - all white, casing, woodwork, beadboard, and other architecturaql elements. It really helps to give some splash of colkor here and there. This soft gray-sage kitchen desk is a great example. And see how the white baseboard transitions across the bottom to tie it in with the rest of the space.

Malibu Fish Plates - when you look at htis arrangement you can practically see a square border around the composition. Use painter's tape to create a frame border for reference when hanging the plates.
traditional bedroom by Liz Williams Interiors
Use plate stands - add plain white or cream color dishes and platter then add some patterned dishes. This is in the guest bedroom. 3 small plates across the top add a sense if order, but overall the composition still has a casual feel.
