Black and white. It always brings to mind images of text rambling across a creamy white page of my favorite Sunday newspaper. Or the beauty of high-contrast photography, like that of Ansel Adams. The combo of those two colors (or noncolors) has a long and varied history.
The newest trend in black and white turns toward an abstract line. Bold, graphic and full of angles, this trend is not for the faint of heart. But if you're tired of brightly painted interiors, this may be the way to switch up your style without going back to beige. Or, take a more moderate approach. Add a couple black and white elements to an existing space — people will still sit up and take notice.

This chair is reminiscent of baskets, '60s graphics and my high school doodles. A set would be stunning against a white table.

| Bold and graphic can still have a natural frame of mind. Stark black and white branches in a small bathroom add lots of movement to the space. |

Like a hard-line drawing of a beautiful jewel necklace, this chandelier looks back on tradition in a modern way. At the same time, it would fit well in an older Arts and Crafts home.

Use a big print to re-cover a boring old wing chair, and you've got a perfect marriage between this bold, linear trend and your own style.

The lines of this bookshelf are so intriguing, I'd hate to see it filled with books. Leave some open space on those steps, perhaps using organic vases and succulents to break it up.

Bathrooms are a great place for going a little design crazy, and this energizing shower curtain does not disappoint. In fact, it might help wake you up first thing in the morning.
