Mirror Power A large mirror has so much power. It cuts down on tile costs by filling much of a wall (while reflecting the material you do invest in) and can virtually double the size of the room, making it feel like a vast personal oasis …

Toilet Paper Holders When placing the paper holder, the tendency can be to picture the roll as hanging lower than it really should. Standard height is about 26 in. off the floor, which is closer to the height of the top of the tank than to the seat, so I recommend placing it on this level for a clean line, like I’ve done in this bathroom. Attaching it to the side of the vanity (toward the front rather than centered, for reachability) is another option for tighter spaces.
Niches. I love adding niches to shower areas, for the practical storage capabilities and the beautiful accent. For a tub they make sense just above the tub surface, as you’ll be lying down when you reach for that shampoo, but in a shower they should be much higher, around 48 in., so you don’t have to lean down to reach anything. Place your shower controls around 42 to 48 in. at the center, and a tub filler 4 to 6 in. above the top of the tub.

gearculture.com SaveEmail Rotating soap holders are a longtime tradition in France — with good reason. They keep counters free and allow soap to dry quickly. No wonder they’re a staple in schools and public buildings. This model from GearCulture comes with a bar of lemon oil soap that’s good for 1,000 washings.
A+R SaveEmail A+R Store - Magnetic Soap Holder - Product Detail - $100 Here’s another way to get the soap off the vanity: a magnetic soap holder. A metal button is pressed into the bar of soap, which is then magnetically affixed to a wall-mounted stem. You can leave the soap in place as you run your hands across it, or remove it for more diligent cleaning.
3. Focus on materials, textures and finishes. You won’t see a lot of ornate detail in Craftsman bathrooms or homes. Instead you’ll find a celebration of basic materials arranged in a rhythm or pattern. “The Arts and Crafts movement was about taking simple things and arranging them artistically,” Metzler says.

Hooks, towel bars and the T.P. holder. Seems that the placement of these things, always a necessity, is the last thing to be considered. They really shouldn’t be an afterthought, especially when they can be such fun design elements. So when planning your project, think about where the hooks, towel bars, toilet paper holders and the like will go so that you can get that all-too-often-overlooked blocking installed in the wall.

Add a cozy rug. A bath mat does not have to be a shaggy little rectangle. Add an Oriental rug to enjoy underfoot during fall and winter. The rich colors will warm up the look of the room as well. Be sure to add a rug pad or rug tape that will grip the floor underneath any bathroom rug to prevent slips.

The tile pro who tiled this shower drilled a perfect hole for the shower hose. These holes are drilled very close to the edge of the tile, which is hard to get right. Tip: When drilling holes so close to the edge of the tile, make sure that the tile is protected from vibration damage. Fully support the tile while drilling and press down to keep the tile from vibrating.
When you or your installer drills tile, make sure there's a small bucket of cold water nearby to cool the bit often. If the water in the cuts starts to boil, the bit hasn't been cooled often enough. If a diamond bit gets too hot, the diamonds will fall off the drill bit and make it worthless. Tip: Drill especially slowly and stop constantly to cool the drill bit when drilling glass tile or any tile. Glass cracks easily if it gets too hot, and the risk is high
Diamond Coring Bit -CAD $40.00This is my favorite type of drill bit. These diamond coring bits cost about $40 where I live. High-speed drills can destroy these bits, so I prefer using a low-speed cordless drill or a variable-speed corded drill for slow drilling. Tip: For holes smaller than ¼ inch, glass and tile bits usually work best. I try to keep two or three on hand for the smaller items in a bathroom, like toilet paper holders and shower bars. These bits work well for most ceramic and porcelain tiles, but I avoid using them on stones like slate.
