In the Rotation: Ceiling Fans Go Chic
Who Knew Ceiling Fans Could be Lust-Worthy? Here's How to Stay Cool in Style
Until recently, I never really liked ceiling fans, and I would still consider a show-stopping chandelier over a ceiling fan at times. Then again, I never had much use for them, and the ones I came into contact with often commanded a lot of attention (not in a good way), were cheap looking, over-scaled or all of the above. Then I moved to Texas, where ceiling fans are lifesavers. On occasion, they even render air conditioning unnecessary, or at the very least help drop the temperature a few degrees. That is huge when it's 110 for long stretches of time.
Now that ceiling fans grace every single room in my house and I use them on a daily basis, I have a new-found appreciation for them. I do not, however, appreciate how many heinous ones there are on the market, but ceiling fan style has come leaps and bounds, and there is something for everyone. Fans are not inexpensive, so most of us shop where we can afford them, but for a little more money you can get a fan worthy of taking center stage in your home. And renters shouldn't fear: Fans can be installed and uninstalled, so you can bring them with you when you move.

Lights attached to ceiling fans often look like an after-thought to me, as if they were tacked on at the end (and often they are). But there are a handful of fans with lights integrated into the design, which is far more attractive.

With only three blades, like the previous one, this sleek fan works beautifully in clean, modern spaces. The low furniture and high placement of the fan make this living room feel much taller than it actually is.
High ceilings are great for any hanging solution, whether decorative or functional. Fans hung low in tall spaces work well because the increased space between the ceiling and the blades allows air to circulate more effectively while adding an interesting element to open spaces.
Not everyone has enough space for a full-size fan with blades extending between 40" and 55" from the center. To keep air moving in tighter spaces, consider a smaller alternative.

Dual rotational fans evoke an industrial-chic look for high-style spaces. The fans rotate, as do the fans-on-fans. Not bad, eh? You can find a similar one here.

A banana leaf-style fan is a whimsical and fitting addition to rooms with a tropical flair. The blade texture adds a layer of interest, making the fan look more like a special installation. You can find some island fans here.

The luxury that is an outdoor ceiling fan was completely lost on me until we moved into our house, which is bedazzled with a front porch complete with two fans. I'm a changed woman! The covered porch already gives us respite from the sun, but add the cool breeze from the fan (and an icy drink) and you've just transported yourself to paradise.
The scarcity of ceiling fans that coordinate well with modern interiors has frustrated countless designers in recent years. Thankfully, there are a handful of perfectly sleek, understated fan options that work beautifully in a modernist setting.
Of course, the modern fan need not be relegated to modern spaces. Traditional elements make this fan (a favorite, can you tell) stand out a bit without being distracting.
The transitional fan peaking through from the office in this home helps pull together the modern elements with the more traditional ones. White, silver/gray and cherry tones are repeated through the house, but also in the fan, making it a seamless addition to the interior.

| There is great subtlety in the details of this living room. With its materials in the same color palette, the ceiling fan adds to the completeness of the composition, without attracting too much attention.

A la Rodney Dangerfield, the fan said, "I get no respect, no respect at all!" :)

It's categorized as a youth fan but I want it for my entry! Why do all things dark & heavy have to be adult and the lighter, brighter, fun things only be for kids? Bending the rules...!
