If there is an area of the house that we are willing to blow our budget in....it is the kitchen. If we're not sleeping we're probably in the kitchen. I cook everyday, a lot of times twice a day, make my own bread, make my own pizza dough, make homemade sausage, everything we eat is fresh, organic, unprocessed and made from scratch whenever possible (I make our hamburger and hot dog buns). My parents have a large kitchen and holidays at my parents house....EVERYONE is in the kitchen. So the work triangle needs to be tight and smart about people still needing to get to the fridge or the main sink. People are watching, talking, playing, milling around, snacking on apps. Likely the island will function as additional prep space. Ashley (and I) loves to bake so a separate triangle comprised of wall oven(s), sink, fridge access and counter top for hot pans, cookie rolling, etc would be perfect. The island could also serve this function. I run a completely full dishwasher every night because I cook and we eat on actual plates (and that's with only three of us). Add dinner guests or a birthday party and we're talking two, three even four loads. Two dishwashers would be nice. One could be in the kitchen and one in the nearby utility room would be another possible arrangement. In our current kitchen we have 13.5' of counter top (includes a double sink and a 3.5' island) plus a 4.5' buffet. For storage we have 21' of lower cabinets (includes buffet) and 8' of upper cabinets. Plus a small, closet pantry. So we have to get at least this same amount of cabinets in our new kitchen. I'm not a hoarder and I hate kitchen gizmos so its not like we're spilling out of the cabinets and things are just shoved into drawers. I think upper cabinets (especially tall upper cabinets) are evil. If gives people an excuse to keep around extra crap that they never use and it becomes a self-fulfilling cycle because if you can't reach it you're never going to use it. Keep things low and within reach and uncluttered and you'll use things more and cook more efficiently.
