Special Delivery: Cooler-than-Usual Mailboxes (7 comments)

View Slideshow
A few years ago, when we added several rooms to our house and resided, we were taken by surprise one day when we found ourselves without a mailbox. The siding team had taken down our old (very gross) box and we'd completely forgotten to buy a new one.

A few days and some rush shipping costs later, we had a sleek, simple stainless steel box positioned next to the front door. The minimal look works with the house, but I wonder if we would've done something a little differently, had we had more time to plan.

There are a lot of great mailboxes there, especially if you're willing to tinker a little on your own. Here's some great inspiration:
This modern design is so unusual - and more than a mailbox, really. It's modern art for the front yard.

The simple addition of a planter gives this mailbox tons of personality - everybody likes seasonal flowers. I'm sure delivery to this house is fun for the postman, too.

This is proof that traditional doesn't have to mean standard or boring. This red box is cute and stands out in a crowd.

This cedar box is gorgeous - perfect for a vacation home, but also great with all different styles of year-round homes. I love the natural wood and the organic lines of the top.

This crazy lady-mailbox requires a certain kind of personality to pull off - and friendly neighbors! Nobody will ever miss your house, though.

Why not play off your house number, especially when it's so simple, like this "4." I love the look of the box and it's fantastic functionality.

This mailbox doubles as a bird-feeder - nice for the birds and fun for hte yard.

This little Japanese-inspired mailbox brings a touch of zen to the front yard. As calming as it is, I'm not sure it's for anyone that into simplicity - I'm still not sure how to remove the mail!
Mailbox
I find kitschy mailboxes, like this fish, kind of charming and funny, especially when they're attached to vacation homes. I'd have a hard time resisting talking to this guy, big mouth Billy bass-style.

I guess we know who's NOT a PC-family. This Mac hard drive mailbox is cheeky, but also a definite branding statement!

These are awesome! I've actually seen that crazy lady mannequin in red in Savannah, but with a head. I wonder if the mailman can reach up that high - perhaps she should have the box in her hands :) The first photo is so interesting, at first I thought the mailbox was a really cool building!
I wish I'd seen the first one while we were doing our addition. Then again, we had so much going on that point that building our own mailbox probably wouldn't have made the to-do list. But it is cool, isn't it?

I don't think I've ever seen truly fun mailboxes before. Great selection!

What a cool ideabook! People are so creative!
Karen74 - I think the red one was built by the homeowners. Here's where I found it: http://livemodern.com/forums/furniture/128813551

It looks complicated, but maybe not. And once you start thinking about building your own, that opens up so many new options.
