Think Pink

If you've ever seen Funny Face with Audrey Hepburn and Fred Astaire, you'll immediately recall the scene where the big-time fashion editor (based on Diana Vreeland) throws her hands up and bellows (elegantly): think pink!
And this ideabook, coming from a person who openly distrusts and underappreciates color. No, I appreciate it; it has its place. While I tend toward whites and grays and texture over color, I love the idea of a good pink. And we're not talking limited to a girl's room, no. Androgynous pink, pink that can exist in fresh forms. Take my own mother, for instance, who painted the dining room in my family's sprawling Texas home a, what the painters nicknamed it, whorehouse pink. Bright, undiluted. And take the photos below, showing off that scratch-your-head, unable-to-ignore, classic-but-always-fresh, giggly funny faced color pink.

While this is as pink as it gets, the color is calmed and broken up not only by the variation of hues, but by the shapes and patterns throughout.

Here pink is one of a three-color combination and, while it adds warmth to balance the blue and green, it doesn't become too cutesy or overpowering.

Again, pink plays a part in a simple but detailed color combination.

To use pink throughout but keep it subtle, use a barely-there blush, and blend it with white linens and furniture.

Here in this fabulous bathroom (should a bathroom look better than many formal sitting rooms I've seen?!) pink gets a balance with dark furniture and detailing, and a touch of white.

Now this is going bold, going fresh. Taking the retro concepts of both bubble-gum pink and a bright kitchen, and throwing them together into a mod structure to reinvent the color. The harsh, strong lines and shapes help to balance the color.

If you love pink AND are gun-shy, incorporate the color through bold details.

More bold details in this awesome mix of pillows. Stronger colors of red and purple are brought in, keeping the room pink-ISH but still light and simple.

Yes, pink is a fun and simple color for mix-matching, no matter how classic or bohemian of a tone it takes. Pink is a color that becomes more interesting when thrown against not-quite-matching other pinks.

Wow. This is serious. This is so over-the-top so insanely inundated that it becomes almost brilliant. While I myself would remove the rug and latticed tables, I adore the dark dark flooring and the white moulding.

The boldness of this pink is even better in this room because it gets more of a balance with the white linens and art and detailing.

Another pink room with a different style and different, but no less effective, details. The unexpected yellow adds a fresh touch.

More along the lines of raspberry (and the "whorehouse pink" of my mother's dining room), this color is both bold and grown-up. A chic take on pink.
Another kitchen, another take on pink.

Pink enters in small bits, here in this unusual and gloriously simply-interesting room.

| And, yes, pink in a girl's boudoir, drawing on delicate French-inspired detailing. |

And this, a much different but no less interesting girl's room. Funky, fun vibe with mermaids thrown in.

Even as one little splash within the flow of a dwelling, the color makes its mark and refuses to be ignored or pushed aside or, ahem, underappreciated.
