Kids' Spaces: Fun, Beachy Bathrooms

Create an underwater wonderland on the walls. This is an easy wall treatment that brings a wave of nautical fun into a kids' bathroom. Get on a ladder and draw a wave design with a pencil. Then using a fine-tip brush, paint around the edges. Fill in with a larger brush and roller, then bring in underwater creatures through coastal wall decor.

Free-hand paint a big beach scene, or try something as simple as adding a stenciled sailboat, anchor, or helm wheel above each towel hook. (Personalize it for the kids in the house with their first names under each stenciled object.) Or stencil small starfish motif around a mirror. You can find many nautical themed stencils at craft stores.

Add a great clean coastal look-tongue and groove walls. Go part way up the wall and use a chair rail, or go all the way up!

This mosaic fish is amazing. Kids will love taking baths underwater with Nemo. For a smaller version, simply add sea-life accent tiles within the rows of tiles on a backsplash or bathtub walls.

Create a captain's message board on the inside of your door. You and your kids can leave each other messages. I would write, "From your Captain: Spit toothpaste in the sink, not near the sink."

Or borrow an idea from this room and use crisp navy blue and white horizontal stripes for a look reminiscent of a French sailor uniform. You can have many narrow stripes or fewer wide ones. Add red towels because red, white and blue are great nautical colors.

For a sunny look, try a yellow and white stripe. Then add blue towels and a nautical signal flag or two.

This mirror could be a DIY project if you have bags of starfish, a flat framed mirror, and hot glue.

Change out the pulls/knobs to a fun seaside look.

Use round mirrors that have the shape of a porthole.

Hooks make it a lot easier for kids to grab a towel, put it back, and go. Go with a galley hook, pirate hook or one that allows you to place a photo or initial on multiple hooks like this one from Pottery Barn. Add an extra hook or two and hang a buoy from it.

Include photographs of your child from a beach or boat vacation. It would be so much fun for your kid to see pictures of themselves on a family vacation.
