See that bulbous, cartoon-y shape to the right? It's a
kamado grill, known for its ceramic enclosure that can cook items both at high heat or slow for extended periods of time. They grill pizza. They can smoke meat and, in some cases, even cook rotisserie too. (Yum.)
While my mouth is watering just thinking of the possibilities, I'll be honest: It's the colorful tile surround that's really piqued my interest.
The BGE has made weekends grilling/smoking something I really look forward to. It has become a delicious hobby! Only advice I would share would be to get the large or extra-large, you won't regret it!
There are lot of great ceramic cookers out there, but none of them as pretty as the Komodo.
Of course, you can build a pretty outdoor kitchen without having the most expensive ceramic cooker:

into my new outdoor kitchen. The primo has a larger cooking surface than the big green egg. I have cooked a dozen times on this cooker and every meal has turned out excellent. Here is a photo of the space
However, the unit in the article is a Komodo Kamado - these are manufactures in Indonesia by an amazing fellow called Dennis Linkletter who delivers one of the best customer experiences available on the planet. The product is awesome to start with, his communication and expectation management is great and his ongoing support exemplary. The product is constantly evolving and improving, so as they release new features to the market, they will always work with the older units already out there. for example, they just released a new "searing kit" which will force the super heated air in a particular direction.. sounds geeky because it is, but these are features created by a guy with a love for his product and clients that you just don't see often these days....
Clearly, I have one of these beasts, and I am pleased to say that it is one of the best investments I ever made - the low and slow heat and the searing capability make for some of the most succulent barbecued dishes around. Something as simple as chicken wings can be transformed from a burnt outside/raw inside sacrilege into golden brown juicy morsels. it really, really does make a difference even on the simple stuff.
I also bought this for the safety aspect too - knowing the kids can't burn themselves by passing the unit is reassuring....
