Guest Picks: A Dining Chair for Every Table
This feast of seating options offers something for every dining room and occasion
With the holidays fast approaching, many are focusing on the dining room, the place that will be a gathering point for family and friends. We all want our guests to be comfortable, and providing just the right chair is the first step.
When selecting the right dining chairs for your tables (they don't have to match styles), there are several things to consider. First, make sure that the dimensions of the dining space are congruent with the size of the dining table and chairs so that the room's size does not overpower the furniture (or vice versa). Second, make sure that the chair's seat height isn't too high or low for the table: There should be around 12 inches between the top of the seat and the top of the table.

gillianne If I needed more seating, I'd treat these as inspiration images and then check craigslist and thrift stores for sturdy, stylish chairs I could use as is or revamp easily (and inexpensively) as a DIY project, especially if they had minimal upholstery.

aharris668 Dining chairs with straight back legs tend to tip over when guests try to rise. Very embarassing for hostess and guest. My set of the french reproductions (3rd photo above) tipped whether on hardwood or carpet. Finally gave them away! Looks only go so far; then practicality takes precedence.
