Warm & Modern (4 comments)

Modern architects are often asked what “style” of architecture they create. It’s a fair and understandable question for a homeowner to ask. My answer, at first, is that I create Warm & Modern spaces, a pronouncement that often results in a look of puzzlement on my clients face!

The goal is always to make space that is as abstract and free from historical recall as possible, while at the same time creating a feeling of warmth and comfort. The word “Modern” so often conjures up visions of self-involved architectural “statements” that appeal only to the intellect.

On the other hand, so many of the historically based new homes have a sense of unreality, since styles of living have changed over the years, and historical materials and workmanship are often impossible to obtain today.

Instead of style, the needs and dreams of the client, as well as the natural gifts of land and climate animate the creation of a home. The emphasis is on volume and proportion of space, and the use of materials and colors that create comfort and serenity.
A great example of this is a new home completed in Los Gatos California on a beautiful and challenging hillside site.

The house is designed to be a natural outgrowth of the hillside, filled with volume and delightful surprises. Warmth is created through the use of a naturalistic color palette and materials, in this case marble, slate, natural copper and maple flooring.

Many clients have told me that they understand that a new house can be warm and modern, and consistent, but what can be done in a more modest tract home remodel/addition? Quite a lot, especially if the scope of the work is limited to one area of the home, the public areas for example, or the yard.

Clients in the wine country near Novato California desired to transform the entertainment spaces of their 1964 tract home into a “Japanese/Italian restaurant” ! Both are wine sellers and enjoy the company of foodies and chefs, more than happy to congregate around the wood-burning pizza oven.

The existing living room, dining and kitchen areas were removed to the studs and rafters. A few well-placed beams allowed for a wide-open, airy entertainment space. The small suburban backyard was treated as an expansion of the indoor public space.

Bold colors and material selections create a feeling of warmth and connection between inside and out, while the fountain provides “white noise” to eliminate the sound of nearby traffic. There is a liberal use of natural finish materials, including slate, copper, plaster, cast concrete counters and wood veneers.

John Klopf of San Francisco similarly does a tremendous job updating Eichler and Eichler style homes in the Bay Area.
In this Eichler home in San Mateo, Klopf has completely updated the existing home and replaced the aging systems and finishes with natural materials such as wood, stained concrete and a soothing color palette.

Klopf's Manzanita House, a new Eichler -like home built in rural California, uses the best of the Eichler characteristics and materials, while streamlining and simplifying.

Andre Rothblatt shows what can be done with a small space to simplify the forms while maintaining a warm serenity. Natural wood horizontal boards, spaced slightly, give texture and movement to what could be an abstract stair form. Contrasting natural wood treads and risers further enliven the simple form.

The lime wall in the patio is gorgeous. Love your style!

It is so interesting. Most of the time, I look to furnish our home in "traditional or antique" furniture. Though I love to throw a splash of MODERN into the space - especially in the common area and out on our patio.

I love the way that you splash bright colors - which actually warms up the area. And the simplicity of the bamboo planter (in the last picture) with the San Fran skyline in the background - it is stunning!

To me a space that feels warm is one that I bond with - I feel instinctively at ease, instantly at home. A feeling of relief washes over me when I enter a great space, especially after a long, stressful day. This can be due as much to the people as the space itself. But, since space has the power to shape and influence our mood and psychology, it can be argued that a warm space has the power to deeply influence our social interactions and behavior for good or ill.
