Kitchen of the Week: A Galley Kitchen in Wine Country

Annie Thornton I love this kitchen. I aspire to have something so intimate while still maintaining an open and airy feel. And the hanging spices are so sweet as well. I would love to see the rest of this house.

olldbobbi I'm completely jealous of all the drawers in the kitchen. Drawers make a lot more sense than cabinets! And it's a lot easier to retrieve that errant tool from the back of a drawer than a cabinet.

WEAVE IDeAS Love the use of shelves to keep it feeling open. White makes it feel bigger - the pops of red add the visual interest. Large format tiles reduce the lines adding to the clean look. Great lights and hardware. Very nice...I would like to work in this kitchen.

trixylarue My brother, my daughter, and I all have IKEA kitchens. We LOVE the drawers. This kitchen is gorgeous. Great idea to have a door with full glass. Of course the pop of red is wonderful too!

seevolt You mention keeping space between the appliances and the opening to the rest of the house. We are looking to redo our (galley) kitchen and a couple of designers have suggested opening things up in a way that would put the sink and stove right next to the living spaces (in one instance, the living room itself). I am uncomfortable with this; even though I do love modern, open loft-like spaces, I feel there should be some distance, not least to hide the mess. Thoughts on the best separation?

Inis Lovely Drawers for the bottom cabinets is so smart. On my wish list. Nothing I hate more than being on my knees, rummaging around in a lower cabinet.

Margaret Nothing beats a galley kitchen for cooking efficiency. When we redesigned our kitchen we switched it from a big room with a peninsula in the middle to a galley plus a huge pantry. It's much much more efficient to cook in. It also looks a lot better - it's more intimate and has a better connection to the dining room.

@seevolt: we have a high counter between the dining room and the kitchen counter and floating cabinets above the counters. It hides mess on the kitchen counter while leaving the kitchen fairly open. Now that we are done I go back and forth about the upper cabinets. When I am getting things in and out of them they are super convenient. When I am sitting in the dining room I think that perhaps a little more open would have been better.

lauraweick What are the dimensions of this kitchen? I'm looking to update my kitchen and it is laid out exactly like this but appears to be smaller. Thank you.

Amy A. Alper Hi Seevolt!. Within this traditional galley kitchen there is a cased opening from the kitchen to the dining area. The range has 24" (width of a cabinet) from the left side of to the wall that separates the kitchen from dining. There is also 24" between the right side of the range and the refrigerator. We relocated the dishwasher to the left of the sink and then had yet another 24" from the left of the sink to the wall. If you are asking about a galley kitchen completely open to your living spaces yet hides the 'apres meal", I've done that. You can check out the Hummel Kitchen on my Houzz Page.

sjmom Great design features but I question the knives being held by a magnet. Hope its strong. Would rather see them in a "block" or drawer. Just my opinion.

Beth McLennan Having worked in professional kitchens for 20 years I can assure anyone worried about the knives on the magnet that this is a perfectly safe way to store them and is done all the time. They actually take a bit of a tug to get them to release. Also a good way to keep them up high if there are small kids around who could open a drawer and reach in.

Amy A. Alper The range is 36" inches wide. The floor tiles, by Bedrosians is 2 x 2 Cerdomas Rifless Color: Inchiotro but is discontinued. Try calling a local favorite tile store and see if a sales person can suggest an alternate.

frenchdecor @seevolt I saw couple of those "open" galley kitchens, those openings not only take out area for wall cabinets (so needed storage) but look like square holes rather than open concept (cheaper way), as more likely the wall could be supporting wall and can't be removed completely, second option was ceiling beam with pillars for support (more expensive way, better look). Also think about kitchen noise if you watch TV in your living room. My family members complain always increasing volume, hate it.

Amy A. Alper The paint was a match to a sample that can't be found. Whites are very specific to each room and finishes so it is always a good bet to get a few samples and try them out. Good luck
