17 Ways to Cozy Up Your Home for Fall
We can't think of a better time to outfit your home with rich colors, snuggly knits and furniture that lets you sink in
Summer may be making its last stand in some places, but I think it's safe to say that fall has arrived. The bountiful season of all things pumpkin colored and cinnamon scented means that we've said our goodbyes to the sights and sounds of summer. But have you swapped out your home's summery, extroverted spirit for fall's cozy, snuggly character yet? Here are a few ways to transition into the season by upping the coziness factor of your home, one burnt orange and red ocher accent at a time.

Dinner fireside. Autumn means more guests over for dinner as the fire roars and the cider warms. Accommodate more people by switching out dining chairs for benches and add just the right touch of understated elegance with burnt orange tableware.

Nature's bounty. You don't have to do much to this traditional kitchen — it's plenty cozy already. But the orange winterberry wreath, peppering of leafy branches, pops of red from the cookware and orange-brown tone brought out in finish of the antique farmer's table call to mind the crowning holiday in fall: Thanksgiving dinner (and the morning-after breakfast).

Red ocher. By far one of the most beloved autumnal leaf colors, red ocher gives the visual cue that fall has arrived. This eclectic coastal bedroom is a study in cozy; the stuffed yet casual bed setting lets the homeowners welcome fall with breakfast in bed and Saturday-morning cartoons.

Goldenrod. This Asian-inspired space doesn't scream "autumn" — it whispers it midyawn right before dozing off for an afternoon nap (just ask the French bulldog).
When the weather is cool and the leaves are falling, there are few better way to settle into a nap than with a hot cup of herbal tea or cider, with the shades drawn and all gadgets turned off (and preferably in another room).

An outerwear display. When you've readied your home for fall, your beach gear will be stored away, leaving hooks, hangers and shelves with room for boots and coats. The winter clothes offer a visual cue the season has changed (without your spending a dime on seasonal decor).

Cable knits. Add a cable knit pattern by way of a tiled rug. It's like having a massive sweater on the floor — but if it's still hot outside, you don't have to sweat it.

Plush seating. In my household, fall doesn't just mean warm apple cider — it means cider with a healthy dose of fall TV. With the last season of 30 Rock, the return of Homeland and the long-awaited third-season start of Downton Abbey on the way as I write this, we're all bound to spend more time in our media and family rooms watching the telly. This kids' cave gets it right by giving loads of seating and footrest options for marathon viewing.

Fire and fur. A chilly evening by the fire with a nightcap in hand is a great way to end any evening, but why not also drape a faux fur throw at the foot of your lounger. You — and your toasty toes — won't regret it.

| An outdoor fire pit. Nature's stunning beauty invites us outdoors in the fall, and thanks to outdoor fire pits, living rooms can extend as far outside as property lines permit. Now, I like Adirondack chairs as much as the next person, but these cushioned outdoor armchairs let you enjoy the few weeks left of evening light without getting a sore bottom, making them winners in my book. | Oversize loungers. Forget La-Z-Boy sofas. Oversize chaises in this new traditional media room–turned–man's den give everyone in the house plenty of cuddle room and front-and-center access to the TV without sacrificing style and elegance. |

Indoor log storage. Modern minimalism gets a bad rap for feeling cold sometimes, but this bedroom is anything but aloof. Logs flanking the fireplace, exposed beams and the glow and warmth of the hearth give this polished cabin a cozy, lived-in feel.

An indoor tepee. Dust off the fabric and bring this beloved play structure indoors. This family upped the comfort level inside the tepee by adding plump throw pillows and sheepskin.

Autumnal drapes. This home's fabric's design is all about autumn. Its sweeping fall to the floor and scale lets us fully appreciate the yellow and red ocher tones and ascending pattern of the fall leaves. The home office also feels current with the addition of a pair of velvet chairs in this season's on-trend blues.

Leafy art. If you're an artist and a DIYer, and you're tired of decorating with leaves you've picked up from the sidewalk, give a mural a go. The scale, rich colors and dimensionality of this wall art inspired by de Gournay wallpaper adds visual interest to what otherwise would have been a staid, lonely corner.

Tufted decor and leather. A chesterfield ottoman pulls together the different pieces and elements of this cabin's great room. Rich crocodile-skin armchairs paired with mostly neutral midcentury modern furnishings give the space a relaxed feel, making it a great place for game nights. And do you see the splash of oxblood red in the sliding doors' frame? It's a subtle nod to an on-trend color that's fitting for this luxurious yet understated home.

Ambient light. Fall gives us a great excuse to take out our scented candles and votives and create more light indoors. This contemporary bath feels cozy, sexy and inviting all at once, and with robes, towels and accessories in burnt orange and green apple, it's perfectly suited for long, warm soaks on chilly fall nights.
