We put in LED's in 2 ceiling light fixtures that utilize the motion detector type of switch. When no one is in the room, they stay on very dim but never go completely off like incandescently do. Are we wasting energy?

gimmecats, this is an educated guess. You are using energy or they wouldn't be dim. My guess is it's a negligible amount, probably about same as clock-radio or cordless phone base. The motion sensor is also using a minute amt. of pwr or it couldn't operate. Another guess: Since the sensor is always on, it may have been passing a low current to your incandescants, but not enough to make them glow. An experiment might be to put the incandescants back in & see if they are slightly warm to touch when "off" due to no motion.

I put some dim LEDs in a stairway and cellar, and was going to wire them to motion detectors. Then I realized that the motion detectors used about 10 ma at 12 volts, and the LEDs run less than that. So I just leave the LEDs on all the time (maybe ten lumens, I dunno). I usually don't need to turn on the big lights.
