'Dinner at Tiffany's' Design Wins People's Choice Award
Old Hollywood glamour gets an eclectic take in a fantasy dining room design created for a fundraising event in Oregon
Although the fictional Holly Golightly lived in a tiny New York apartment, this fantasy dining room would have suited her just fine. Created for October's Serving Up Style 2012 fundraising event in Portland, Oregon, this staged showcase space beat out 19 other dining rooms to win the People's Choice Award. Working on a tight deadline and budget, Urban I.D. Interior Design Services designed this glamorous Holly Golightly–inspired dining room based on the signature blue-green hue of Tiffany's boxes.
The design team wanted to create an elegant space that conveyed Breakfast at Tiffany's but still felt livable. They used beautiful furniture donated by Parker Furniture to come up with a creative layout that felt comfortable but open. Wall paint: Green Bay, Emerald Collection, Sherwin-Williams; rug: designer's own
Inexpensive accessories and furniture (like the rug, ottomans and mirrors) combine with heirloom-type pieces (like the table, chairs and chandelier) for an accessible but elegant look. "It's easy to have a beautiful room on an unlimited budget," says Urban I.D. designer Laura Evans. "But the designers at Urban I.D. can get creative with high-quality, less expensive pieces as well."

The team placed a stuffed orange tabby — much like Holly Golightly's cat, "Cat" — as a playful touch on one of the side chairs. A mirrored side table holds champagne, ready for a celebratory toast. All the designers at Serving Up Style had a short time frame. After spending about a week building the walls offsite, having drapes made and upholstery fabricated, Urban I.D. had a matter of days to pull everything together. "We had contractors and designers working on top of each other for two days to try and get it all done in time," says Evans. Curtain fabric: Robert Allen Fabrics; china cabinet: Stanley
Behind the intricate table setting, a massive photo of Holly Golightly peers into the space. Each place setting has its own Tiffany box, complete with jeweled trinkets and treasures. "Most everyone has personal treasures they want to incorporate into the redesign of a room," says Evans. "We tried to show that it is possible to combine those treasures with new pieces for a beautiful end result."

jbsilver Actually I voted for this design (again mainly because of the fireplace) for it's main eating area. Not for the added pieces of interest such as the cat (I'm allergic). It goes to show seeing that this design won that most people still want something more traditional. As for the other designs, I can appreciate the effort the designers put into them. They were very interesting and I'm sure would fit into the category of bizarre eating experiences. That is if that is what one is looking for.
