A Spacious Basement Gets in the Game
A new game room and bedroom suite turn a sizable basement into a major player for a Portland family
This Portland, Oregon, remodel turned a dark '70s-style basement into a dream space for a family of four. Designer Erin Davis of Mosaik Design & Remodeling and Jenny Guggenheim of Fig Studio Interior Design made full use of this spacious 1,700-square-foot basement, incorporating a game area, TV area, bedroom, bathroom and kitchenette. Midcentury-inspired furniture and colorful accents add a playful undertone to this beautiful multipurpose room.

| Removing the many walls in the basement, raising the ceiling and opening the staircase dramatically changed the room's relationship to the outdoors. It's a walk-out basement — the house sits on a slope — and the windows let in plenty of light. "Most people say that it doesn't feel remotely like a basement when you're down there, because now there's so much natural light streaming in," says Davis. The kitchenette has all the necessities for messy kids who love to eat — an undercounter fridge, a microwave drawer and a disposal in the sink. The mosaic tile backsplash pulls the gray cabinetry and quartz countertops together. The salvaged chrome corbels underneath the cabinetry originally held train luggage racks.

A staircase divides the basement into a game room and a TV/family room that still function together. Stadium-style lighting and custom art reflect the clients' love of sports. Bar-height tables and colorful benches from CB2 provide a place for the kids to perch on while taking a break from ping-pong.

A Moroccan-inspired dresser carries the travel theme into the guest bedroom. Once the underhome garage, this space also doubles as a storage and workout room. Its location at the end of the hallway keeps noise from the game room away.

The rest of the bedroom mimics this theme. During the remodel, both Guggenheim and the client took individual trips to Spain. Guggenheim brought back the globe lamps and rugs especially for this room.
"I think most people can't see the amazing potential that basements, attics and third bedrooms have, and that this unused space is truly wasted space," says Davis. "Most times you don't need a bigger home, you just need to live smarter in the one you have."

Sheryl Prince I adore this basement. My unfinished basement isn't as big, but I could definitely incorporate some of the design ideas presented here. I especially love the kitchenette. It would be a perfect fit for my basement!

lauraco How does one raise the ceiling when there's a floor above? How high is the ceiling now?

asalerno1 @lauraco, you can only raise a drywall ceiling as far up to the joists; often drop ceilings are installed in basements to allow easier access to pipes or HVAC lines. Other basements i've seen recently leave the joists exposed and simply paint (spray) the joists (and all pipes & wires) one color to give more height to the room while lending a more "finished look". There are several examples on Houzz of this.

tanner2 One doesn't have to be ingenious to decorate a "basement" if there are large windows and especially a sliding glass door walk-out. It's just not as clever as a successful renovation of a subterranean room with few small, high windows.
