Houzz Tour: Global Decor Warms a Spanish Revival Bungalow
Inviting and eclectic, this Northern California home brims with pieces from around the world that come together in a harmonious style
Designer Alison Davin points to her client's unique style when describing this warm bungalow in Marin County, California. "She just has this impeccable taste," Davin says, "and her Peace Corps background also shaped a lot of our choices when it came to decor."
The client asked Davin to create a home that felt warm and lived in instead of sleek and brand new. "Naturally, vintage items and other global decor pieces with history won my client over," the designer says.

"This home was never going to have a brand-spanking-new feel," Davin says. "My client really wanted the house to have a sense of history, right down to the accessories."

Davin added reclaimed wood beams to the ceiling, a nod to the home's Spanish revival roots. The beams warm the white canvas of the interior and visually expand the compact living room. A gallery of family photos fills one side.
Tip: Master the medley of an eclectic gallery wall and embrace a nonlinear arrangement. Your home will feel less styled and more lived in. Weave the frames together with a common palette of neutrals to minimize a hodgepodge effect. Davin used black, birch and silver here.

Tip: Throw a few curves to a corner filled with straight lines and angles. A vintage clock, barrel hoop and gourd-like vessel soften the straight edges and lines of this mantel, fireplace structure and exposed beams.

Davin loves the light-filled kitchen, which showcases the client's penchant for global decor. An Indonesian fishing net wraps around a rice-paper-lined teardrop Tucker Robbins light pendant here, and African serving bowls hang on a nearby wall. The bench and dining table are made of reclaimed pine.

Tip: Pair mismatched dining table seats with a bench (background, legs showing) to create a balanced composition and increase seating options.
"We did very little to the kitchen," Davin says. "It was more of a cosmetic upgrade from the previous owners." The drawers got a lift from new paint as well as new pulls from Restoration Hardware. The yellow and taupe tiles add a high note of pattern to the interior's hushed creams, whites, browns and tans.

The daughter's playroom doesn't stray too far from the home's neutral base — but the whimsical tepee, artwork display, kid-size table and stools more than make up for the lack of splashy, playful color punches found in most kids' rooms.
"The tepee belonged the client. She really liked this idea of having it in the house as opposed to outside. I think it works in this playroom," says Davin.
Tip: Feel free to choose grown-up and stylish pieces for the kids' rooms. Davin didn't shy away from using custom Romo linen for the Roman shade. A subdued rug that could easily find a place in the living room ties all the furniture together.
Pendant light: Floreal; shelving units: Roost (discontinued); rug: Madeline Weinrib; paint: Soft Chamois, Benjamin Moore

Cathy Lara A home that whispers. I'm thinking of doing the same thing as Jute did with the platters behind our dining room table... but with bowls from West Elm.

pippabean Would have loved to see pictures of the outside of this house. Love the modern approach to furnishing a traditional house. It's not done often enough. This shows how to successfully do it. Kudos

gillianne This style may whisper (well said, Cathy Lara), but it speaks with theatrical clarity that reaches the back rows. These spaces showcase my favorite look, a blend of neutral tones with tons of texture, natural materials and natural light, and a sense of openness--neither minimalist nor cluttered but eminently "livable." Scandinavia meets Globe Trekker? Whatever it is, I find it very appealing.
