Hi There! I currently live in a 1920s cottage in Atlanta that I'll describe as "collected."
I got into design via Landscape Architecture, which I studied at the University of Virginia. I've been writing about design online for quite a few years over at Hatch: The Design Public Blog.

While there are many gorgeous ways to create a floor, whether it be bamboo, slate, terrazzo, or a funky retro linoleum, sometimes a vast room needs a good rug to break it up. Whether it's an absorbent bathmat for your wet feet post-shower, or a big old bearskin (oh people, I tried to find a funny example of this on flickr and I just couldn't do it to you!); a small throw for under the kitchen sink or a lovely hand-knotted wool rug to curl up on in front of the tube, some areas just scream for a rug to ground the room.
Rugs can add warmth, delineate different programs within a larger space, serve as the only source of color and pattern and provide a contrast to the flooring below. Here are some examples of where the rug just makes the place.
I've never gotten over the Madeline Weinrib zig zag rug pictured here in an old issue of Domino (I think this is a Miles Redd room). It has stood the test of time, been copied widely, yet has never gone out of style.
dana29, I know. It's the price you pay for hand tufted wool - you have to think of the rug as a work of art. Personally, between the amount of soda, coffee, and red wine I tend to spill on a rug and having a cat who would love to pull at it with her claws, I'm on a strictly IKEA budget for rugs. You really can tell the difference on rugs like the one shown above. When I visited Angela Adam's store in Portland I had to hold myself back from touching them too much!
I love these rugs! Especially the purple and white one...so cute!
I started using area rugs in my outdoor spaces! I have a decent size porch and decided that I need a focal point so I put an outdoor area rug under my table and chairs. I don't have a pic yet but this is the rug I purchased but you can find it at http://bit.ly/dmNKEe.
