I'm a writer who ended up making lots and lots of cookies. I was a cookie decorator at a shop for almost ten years. I published a cookbook on cookie decorating in 2007, "Cookie Sensations." My second cookbook, "Sugarlicious," was published in early 2012 and is all about decorated cookies, cupcakes, marshmallows, and other crafty sweets, much like I offer on my blog, "the decorated cookie." http://www.thedecoratedcookie.com
I'm also the Edible Crafts editor at http://www.ediblecrafts.craftgossip.com. I have an MFA in Literature and an MA in Liberal Arts.
I live in Washington, DC with my husband, two daughters and three cats, and we're slowly fixing up our 85-year-old house.

Every year I'm determined to get my Christmas shopping done by the end of November. I never, ever do. This year, however, I will because I'm expecting my second child in mid-December, and the last thing I want to think about is buying last-minute gifts with a wailing newborn in my arms. I've compiled a bunch of unique gifts for the kids in my life, gifts that I myself would have loved as a child. Just so you know my audience, I'm buying for my 5-year-old daughter and for all of my nieces. My nieces range in age from 4 to 7 and one tween. All lean towards arts and crafts and the like, so you'll see a general theme here, but I did try to veer from those categories a bit for breadth. Happy shopping! — Meaghan from The Decorated Cookie
I'm thinking of getting my niece, who very much reminds me of me at her age, started with the latch hooks. I was obsessed as a kid — Garfield, kittens, rainbows, lions, anything latch hook. I wonder what happened to all those mini rugs. They'd make great throw pillows today. (I'm about half serious, mind you.)
My art-loving self loved paint-by-numbers kits. The more complicated, the better. (I even bought a sort of grown-up version recently, but I haven't had a chance to open it yet. Ah, to have the leisure time of childhood again.)
Scratch n' sniff stickers! Oh, the memories of childhood are all flooding back: my sticker collection, all those intriguing scents (cotton candy, peppermint, root beer, old socks) from a mere scratch on paper. They're a true technological marvel.
How about these for the kid who doesn't mind socks and underwear under the Christmas tree? Or the ever-polite kid? Or the retro kid born in the wrong decade? I don't know, but I think these hankies are adorable.
I actually splurged on this exact set of darling bunny and mouse dress-up dolls while I was in Paris. (Not that "while I was in Paris" is an oft-used phrase for me, mind you.) Believe it or not, it was less expensive in the Parisian toy store. It really is darling, though.
While this one may end up in the "what do we do with this now?" pile, it would be cool to watch. Apparently the flowers, trees and snow magically appear with a magical solution over ten hours.
This is for superhero kids, and it also comes in plenty of colors and styles for boys and girls. Plus, there are accompanying wrist bands, wands and masks.
