10 Quick and Easy Ways to Dress Your Bed
How to make your bed: Change up your bedroom design style with what you already have
Making the bed is not my favorite activity. Mind you, I love how the bed looks when it's made, and I always want the bed made when company comes over, but I just don't like the act of doing it. Of course, if it's not done to my liking, I waste no time in making adjustments. We designers are hard creatures to please.
My favorite made beds are ones that look beautiful, but also approachable, not too fussy, and certainly easy to undo. I'm going to venture a guess that most husbands and boyfriends, not to mention plenty of ladies, prefer fewer pillows on the bed. For the most part I'm in agreement, but let's look at some styles (even with a handful of pillows) that won't overwhelm anyone and look great — and company-ready — everyday.

1. Partial roll-down. Have some snappy pillows you'd like to showcase? Well, roll that comforter down a bit and prop the pillows up!

| 2. Full roll-down. If having the comforter up by the pillows seems too hot (as it does right now, what with Texas' 100+ degrees weather!) roll down the comforter to the edge of the bed to expose beautiful sheets and create a fun band at the end. The look is simple and casual but tailored — easy to make; even easier to un-make and climb into! |

| 3. Tucked band. Similar to the roll-down but more tailored, the tucked band is often achieved with an accent textile. If you've traveled and brought back a gorgeous piece of fabric you're not sure what to do with, consider making it part of your bedding scheme. You'll get to enjoy it everyday without over-using (and possibly ruining) it. |

4. Full coverage. By far the easiest bed-making method is just pulling the comforter all the way up and tucking it in a bit at the front edge of the the pillows. Make sure it's all straight and call it a day. No shame in this! Jazzy bedding and well-coordinated furniture and accessories don't hurt, but this is a simple, good-looking option that doesn't have to break the bank to look tailored and finished.

| 5. Tight and tucked. If you have a fabulous bed frame worth showing off (or, if you just don't like dust collecting at the end of of you bedding), perhaps you prefer a more tailored look. In that case, tuck your comforter or blanket under the mattress. Decorative pillows at the head of the bed bring in layers and texture. |
6. Stacked and tucked. You like pillows? Pile them on! But try to keep them to a useful minimum. In this setup, the decorative pillow sits up-front while the sham and pillows most of us sleep on are stacked. The look is simple, clean and sophisticated.

7. Working in the body pillow. A lot of people swear by their body pillows, but incorporating them into your bedding scheme can be a challenge. Not anymore! Take a cue from Amy Lau and get that pillow in a coordinating case, prop it up in front of your other pillows, drape a gorgeous textile casually at the end of the bed and voila: the body pillow is seamlessly coordinated.

| 8. Mixing and matching. Add texture and interest with mismatched-but-coordinated pillow cases. Stripes, a bold graphic, a small pattern and a solid will always work well together in the right color combination. Mix scales to be sure there's enough difference between the patterns, and enjoy. |

| 9. Let's not forget the kids. Bunk beds are not easy beds to make. Let's face it: Who wants to dangle off the top bunk with one hand and foot while balancing and making the bed with the other hand and foot? I'll tell you: no one. So keep it simple. |

These twin beds look sophisticated without being overdone. The stripes elongate the bed and introduce a nice texture to offset the Moroccan-esque headboards.
The band approach works well for twin beds, too. This room could accommodate kids or adult guests with its refined look.

10. Mixing and matching, twin-style. Twin beds don't have to match! I love the idea of making each bed reflect the personality of the little person sleeping in it.

Roberta Philbrick Oh my...I couldn't get past the LIGHT fixtures in photos 4 and 5 to even worry about the bedding...too big and gaudy for me. We use a duvet cover without the duvet inserted inside as our comfortor/bedspread. My husband is always hot and I'm always cold so this has been a good compromise.

mybell Bunk beds are hard to make. I solved that problem for a client that owned a high end boat (yacht). She picked out two quilted comforters (ready mades) and I modified them by putting elastic on each of the corners so that they easily stayed tucked under and neat. When they arrived at the boat on the weekends, she put a fitted sheet over the comforters and gave them a blanket and the children were responsible for folding their blanket and putting at the bottom of their bed. When they left the boat, they took the top bedding home, leaving the beds neatly made.
